Woods 'll water
Remembering the days of soda fountains
My wife and I attended the tour
of homes that was held in Madison,
Ga., this past weekend. Madison
has to be one of the prettiest towns
in Georgia with its scores of re
stored antebellum homes.
The citizens of Madison have
done an unbelievable job of restor
ing not only the houses, but they
have also saved the majestic old
trees of the town.
I often ride around Perry and
think of the old houses, the historic
Houston County Court House, the
Baptist Church and the great elms
and oaks that lined our streets when
I was a boy.
Most of them are gone now, the
victim of a very progressive town.
Perry has become a great little town
because it is so progressive, but it
has cost us dearly in historic value.
I saw something in Madison that
probably impressed me more than
the old houses and trees. Not just
one, but two drugstores in the his
toric downtown area still had soda

Butler at Northside. The Eagles
are at the top of the region 2AAAA
standings at 3-0, and Butler, 0-3 in
the region, won't be a serious chal

Eagles don't appear to have but a
couple of challengers in the region,
now, Lakeside and Warner Robins.
Butler will win some region
games becasue they play all of the
pathetic Macon teams, but it won't
come against the Eagles. Phil's
pick, Northside.

Instead of going for the sure out
at first, the Red Devil secondbase

However, the throw was bad, allow
ing Fendley to score the first run.
A walk to Stephanie Andel
loaded the bases with one out.
Emily Mathis would single to

error in the outfield would leave
runners at second and third. Robin
Griffen would get the final two runs
of the inning home with a single to
right.
The Panthers would add two in
surance runs in the third. Fendley
led the inning off with a single. A
misplay of Mills grounder to short

Duren would lift a fly to center
to score Fendley. One out later,
April Fendley would single to cen

Hornets shock Deerfield
By VETO F. ROLEY

Like last year, the Hornets tried
to make a late run in the sectional
playoffs Saturday at Statesboro.
But, after handing Deerfield then
first loss of the season, 2-1, the
Hornets lost to Tattnall 3-1 and
Deerfield 14-9.
But, first the Hornets had to get
to Statesboro. And, after splitting
with Southland Tuesday, that meant
they had to beat FPD at least once
on Wednesday.
In the first game, the Hornets
jumped out to an early 5-0 lead be
hind Jennifer Smith's grand slam
homer with one out. However, the
Vikings came back quickly and
score four in the fourth and four in
the fifth to win 8-5.
With a date waiting in Southland
the next day to determine the fourth
team from GISA 1-AAA, the
Hornets came through with a 9-8
win over FPD in the second day.
Tied 5-5 after three, the Hornets
took the lead with a single run in_

fountains in them!
How many years has it been
since you have seen a working soda
fountain in a drug store? One of
the fond memories of youth was a
trip down to one of the local drug
stores for a milkshake after school.
Everone gathered there for enlight
ning conversations about sports,
hunting, courtships and other such
deep subjects.
The drug store served fast foods
before fast food restaurants were
ever thought of. They served several
items of food that have never been
equalled anywhere else.
A drugstore milkshake had a fla
vor that is unmatched, probably be
cause it was made from real, whole
milk and ice cream, not ice milk.
Putnam County at Jones
County. The War Eagles have made
a rare appearance in the Associated
Press top ten class A teams, and
they gave up their first points of
the year Friday night in winning
21-15 over Wrens in a 4-A North
game.
Jones dropped its first game of
the year Friday to Mary Persons,
but they should handle Putnam in
the classification mismatch. Phil's
pick Jones County.
Jeff Davis at Vidalia. THe
Indians (Vidalia), have lost twice as
many games, four, as the rest of 2-
AA north combined. It appears to
be a down year for Ladson Helms at
defense the rest of the way, getting
only two more hits in the game.
And, the Panthers would need
those five insurance runs, with
Jackson responding with five runs
in the top of the fourth to cut the
Perry lead to two.
But, that would be the only runs
that Jackson would score with
Griffin being unhittable the rest of
the way, giving up only one hit
with two out in the seventh the re
mainder of the game. Griffin retired
nine of the last 10 batters.
In the first game Thursday at
Jackson, the Panthers took the early
3-0 lead behind a double by Marina
Culley and a triple by Mills.
However, Jackson would roar
back behind the power of Brown,
who had a three run homer in the
third, Watson, who had a two run
homer in the fourth, and Tyus who
led the sixth off with a homer, for
the 11-5 win over the Panthers.
In the second game, the Panthers
would use a pair of three-run in
the fourth and three runs in the
fifth. Mary Katherine Walker led
the third inning rally with a two
RBI double to right.
Although the Hornets allowed
two runs in the seventh, they man
aged to hold off the late FPD rally
for the win.
At Monroe on Thursday, the
Hornets split, losing the first game
9-6; but winning the second game
17-8.
Coming into Statesboro, the
Hornets were the number four seed
In the sectional tournament, mean
ing they got to tace Deerfield,
which had not lost a game in the
season.
In the top of the first, the
Hornets drew first blood. Back to
back singles by Claire Hart and
Ashlee Calhoun put runners on the
corners. One out later, Julee Fryer
lifted a sac fly to left for the first
run of the game.
Deerfield would get their sole
run of the game when Lauree Parker
hit a solo homer to left-center with
two out.
1974 Westfield
Hornet reunion
slated Oct. 14
The Westfieldd Schools 1974
Hornet Football team will be
having their 20th reunion on
Friday, October 14.
All team members, cheerleaders,
coaches, and “significant others”,
along with spouses and children, are
invited to a reception in their honor
at 6:30 p.m. in the Gymnatorium.
The things that are sold for milk
shakes now are a poor imitation of
the real thing.
The drugstore hotdog was an
other gourmet delight. The buns
were slightly toasted and the dogs,
with its covering of mustard, catsup
and onions or relish, were fit for a
king. The hamburgers were made
from real meat with no additives
and tasted nothing like a fastfood
hamburger.
The Houston Drug Store was
probably the most popular of the
gathering places. It was located
where Jones Jewelers is now lo
cated. The mirrows that lined the
wall behind the seating booths were
kept when the building was cen
verted to a jewelry store and can
still be seen on the left hand side of
the store.
If you wanted curb service, you
pulled your car up to the curb right
in front of Houston Drugs on
Carroll Street and blew your horn.

beater either. But the Yellow
Jackets appear to have the edge,
judging by common opponents.
Phil's pick, Jeff Davis.
Phil's other picks this week in
clude Mary Persons over Bleckley
County and West Laurens over
Perry in a couple of region 3AA
matchups. Macon County will be
on the road to Stewart Quitman.
The Bulldogs are 5-0, outscoring
opponents 205-6 over that span.
The 'Dogs will win again.
Your team needs your support at

nings to take a slim 8-6 lead before
falling 9-8.
April Fendley would key the
three run fourth with a bases clear
ing triple with two outs, scoring
Culley, Mathis and Katherine
Blount.
Blount and Laurie Coffee would
start the three run third off with
walks, Amber Fendley and Duren
would get RBI singles, while Mills
would drive in a run with a sac fly
to center.
Amber Fendley would also score
in the fifth following a triple. Mills
would get the senior Fendley across
the plate with a sac fly to left.
However, it was not to be
Perry's day, as the Red Devils re
sponded with two runs in the fifth
to tie the game, and one run, on a
Perry error, in sixth to win.
Perry would get runners on first
and second with two outs in the
seventh to try to pull the game out;
but, Amber Fendley and Mills
would be stranded when the Red
Devil second sacker hauled in a line
drive for the final out of the game.
However, the Hornets would
come back in the sixth to hand
Deerfield their first loss.
Laura Posey would single. An
error in the outfield on Jennifer
Stewart's fly would put runners on
first and second. Shannon Lewis
would then ground to second to
score Posey and tie the game.
The Tattnall game would see a
scoreless battle through five in
nings. Once again, it would be the
Hornets getting on the board first.
Bristol Sullivan led the sixth off
with a single to center. Hart fol
lowed with a single to center.
However, two outs still had runners
at first and second.
Fryer stepped to the plate, and
the cleanup hitter cleaned up, rip
ping a single up the middle to score
Hart.
But, Tattnall would answer in
the bottom of the inning. Ashley
Smith would reach on an infield er
ror. Amy Foster would ground to
second, but Smith would beat the
throw to second base.
Tiffany Hyde then lifted a single
to left-center which was bobbled by
the outfielder, allowing Smith to
score and put runners on second and
third. Joni Barlow got a sac fly to
left and Phelicia Phillips singled to
center for the final run of the game.
The loss sent the Hornets down
to the "losers" bracket, where they
faced Deerfield again. This time the
Knights were not as chivalrous.
Deerfield would score three in
the fourth and four in the fifth to
blow a 6-5 game open.
your order and deliver it back in a

on your car door.
The soda fountains were usually
presided over by a much admired
woman who every body knew and
loved. She kept order among the
young people who gathered there,
which really wasn't too hard back in
those days.
For many years Sudie Yates ran
the Houston Drug fountain and if I
remember right, Mrs. Watts ran the
Kicklighter fountain on the comer.
I feel sorry for the young people
of this day who will never have the
pleasure of gathering at the soda
fountain and enjoying the ham
burger and shake or the hotdog and
a real coke from a Coca-cola glass.
Much has been lost.
It's time to go crappie fishing
Already, we are beginning to feel
a small, but significant, drop in the
temperature early in the mornings,
and the days are starting to shorten.
It won't be long before the first
chilling frost of Fall pops in on us.
To us, this is the signal that a new
crappie season is just about to be
here.
Susanne and I really enjoy crap
pie fishing during this time of the
year. Usually, the weather is a little
cool in the mornings, but as the
sun pops up, the air quickly warms
and the wonderful sounds of Fall
abound all around. And, that is
what it is all about.
A lot of sportsmen are busy fin
ishing up the dove season, bow
hunting for deer, or trying o con
centrate all of their effort on the
opening day of gun season.
Except for the bow hunting,
Susanne and I used to go through
this ritual each year also. But, we
could never bring ourselves to go
out in the hot weather just knowing
the possibility of getting ticks all
over us, or the remote possibility
of seeing a snake.
I know that there are sprays to
keep ticks away, but there isn't any
thing that will keep snakes away.
And, besides that, I didn't want to
leave such a mess in my pants so
early in the morning. Talk about
scent cover.
Since we have slowed up on deer
hunting for lack of places to go, we
decided to continue fishing this
time of year. Occasionally, we still
go deer hunting down in Laurens
County, although most of the time
we wonder if the drive was really
worth the hunt.
Susanne and I quickly found out
that this is the ideal time to go to
some of the local lakes like Sinclair
and Oconee. There are still some

tournaments going on, but nothing
like during the Spring and Summer
months.
On some days the parking lots at
the ramps are virtually empty.
When you get on the lake, you may
see only a couple boats all day.
As the water temperature starts
to cool down to the 70s, crappie
will begin to move out the deep
water haunts they used during the
summer, toward the mouth of
creeks.
Finding crappie this time of year
is relatively easy. All you have to
do is use your graph or flasher and
work the creek mouths along their
ledges. When you start finding
standing timber or brush piles, start
looking for schools of baitfish.
Usually right underneath the bait
fish will be schools of crappie.
The crappie will follow these
huge schools of baitfish up and
down creeks, feeding throughout the
winter. As the water temperature
gets colder, the crappie will move
further up the creek, and will even
tually move vertically into the
warmer water.
Sometimes, it's very easy to
troll up and down these creek edges
and catch a limit of slab size crap
pie—the kind you take home and
fillet, instead of scaling. A mess of
20-to-30 two pound crappie is a lot
of meat when you think about it.
Now, we enjoy eating bass filets;
but, we will just about turn bass
down for a big piece of fried crappie
filet.

Do you want to try something
good? Usually we ll do this when
we have a bunch of folks over for a
fish fry. Believe me, they eat more
fish cooked this way than any
other.
Take bass or crappie filets and
cut them up into bite size pieces.
Roll each piece in bisquick or pan
cake flower and refrigerate about
two hours.
Then make a thin batter using
bisquick or pancake flour and 7-Up,
Sprite, or ginger ale. Keep your
batter thin.
Dip each piece into the batter
and drop it immediately into hot
vegetable or canola oil. Don't put
many pieces in the pan at one time,
and be careful not to have the oil
too hot. As the pieces come to the
top, take them up and drain thor
oughly.
Make up some homemade cock
tail sauce or tarter sauce. We like to
use vinegar pepper sauce like you
would put on mustard and turnip
greens. Top all that off with some
good soda and jelapenio hushpup
pies or jelapenio cornbread and
coleslaw. As the Cajun cook says,
"That's some kind of good eating!"
We understand that Lake Weiss
may very well be the big crappie
capitol of the world—especially if
you talk to any of the locals. And,
there have been some record
catches, both in size and limits,
over the last couple of years.
I don't know so much about it
being the crappie capitol of the
world, however, because we have
seem some of the giants that are
caught each year on Lake
Okeechobie.
Until next time . . . we've gone
fishing.
