Perry Middle
teachers listed
in Who's Who
Perry Middle School is pleased
to announce that four of our
teachers have been included in the
third edition of Who’s Who Among
America’s Teachers, 1994. All of
teh 66,500 listed teachers were
selected by one or more of their
former students who themselves
were listed in either Who's Who
Among American High School
Students or The National Dean's
List.
It is a great honor for a teacher
to be recognized for excellence by
former students, especially when
those students represent the best
high school and college students in
America today. Perry Middle
School is very proud of all of our
staff and are proud of the
recognition of four of our
outstanding teachers.
Those teachers included are:
Evelyn Felton McGhee, seventh
grade science and language arts;
Katherine Orlovich Shelton, eighth
grade science; Lula M. Wynn,
eighth grade language arts; and
Mary Beth Radik Young, honors
science.
Two local candidates vie for county post
At the end of the Democratic and
Republican primaries, two Perry
residents captured their respective
party nominations for Post 2 of the
Houston County Board of Com
missioners.
And, when the smoke had cleared
away, it seemed like the 1980 Pres
idential contest would be replayed,
with one minor difference. The
Houston County race would feature
Democrat Ronald ’'Wayne" Ragin
against Republican James "Jim"
Carter.
Wayne Ragin
Although bis pursuit of higher
education and career has moved him
from state to state during much of
his adult life, Ronald “Wayne" Ra
gin. a native of Perry, says he
chose to return to his hometown in
1990.
“Of all the places 1 have lived
over the years, none have been like
home to me; none have made me
feel the same sense of attachment
that 1 feel in Houston County," the
39-year-o!d Ragin said recently.
“That’s the main reason I moved
back here and have gotten involved
in so may civic and community or
ganizations. I can remember being a
kid and my family having neigh
bors who were always concerned
over what happened to us. I just
want my children to live in the
same safe and open environment
that I lived in-an environment
where people are truly concerned
about one another."
A 1972 graduate of Perry High
School and a 1976 graduate of
Howard University in Washington,
D.C., Ragin currently serves as an
employee relations manager for a
local defense contractor. He is a
former legislative assistant, having
served three ana a half years work
ing for Sen. Sam Nunn in Wash
ington and has also served as a per
sonnel representative for various
county governments and has run
political campaigns for several suc
cessful politicians in neighboring
Tennessee. For more than a decade,
her served as a representative for a
national pharmaceutical company.
Outside of work, Ragin is very
service and community oriented and
is a member of the Perry Area
Chamber of Commerce, the Perry
Evening Optimist Club and the
Perry Economic Development
Committee. He is a certified volun
