Fall is time to do maintenance on fishing rigs
Everyone is wondering if (he
cool weather is here to stay for a
while. Personally, I don’t think
so. Every year around “fair time”,
we will usually have a cold snap.
Years back, there would always be a
small frost during this little cold
snap. It would only last for a cou
ple of weeks and then the warm
weather would be back on us for
several more weeks.
If you’re not a year round fish
erman, this is a good time to get
some of your gear clean and ready
for storage. Most of you probablly
don’t even bother to clean that fa
vorite rod and reel It just gets stuck

1994 playoffs interesting
The 10-game warinup season is
over. The high school football sea
son, which has been going on since
the last week in August, is over.
The playoffs are here. The second
season, where all of the playoff
contenders start even Regular sea
son records have dictated which
teams make their respective region
playoffs, and who will play whom,
but every team is 0-0. Some teams,
granted, have a decided edge. Those
with playoff traditions who keep
coming back year after year. Teams
like Valdosta, Warner Robins,
Southwest DeKalb, Thomson, Dal
ton, Cedartown, Mary Persons,
Carrolton, Lincoln County and
Manchester, who seem to make the
playoffs every year. Recently,
teams like Peach County, Macon
County and Thomas County Cen
tral have joined the parade.
Let's explore the playoff picture
as the CtHSA searches tins weekend
for the 64 teams that will make up
the state playoff format a week

wonder why it doesn’t work as well
as it used to. With a little time on
your part, your fishing equipment
will last for many years without
major repairs. Susanne and I have
casting reds that are 15-16 years
old and used year round and we still
have not had any major problems
with them. I have replaced some
gears, a couple of drag washers and
several springs that have broken
from extended use. If we can have

keep or. your part should make the
reels last a lifetime.
Think about it a minute. Why
do we buy new rods and reels.?
Most of the time we think we need
another one or the old one is 4 or 5
years old and close to being on its
last leg. One of die biggest reasons
is that the manufacturer has come
out with a new “how to get better
results feature” that we just gotta
have. Between us, we have in the
boat during a tournament 25-30
rods and reels. This sounds like and
is a lot of equipment, but in our
case a lot of this equipment is spe
cialized type of equipment.
For those of you who don’t fish
all year round, take the time to do a
little preventative maintenance and
protect your investments during the
off season. The very first thing to
do is to strip all the line off the
spools. Line is relatively cheap and
leaving it stored for a long period of
time will give it a “memory” Once
all the line has been stripped off,
then completely tear down the rest

and clean others thoroughly clean
with a good solvent. If you are
afraid to tear down a reel, there are
several people in the area who will
do it for you for a nominal fee.
Once the reel has been thoroughly
cleaned, lubricate it with the proper
grease and/or oil. The next thing I
do is to place the reel in a zip lock
bag with a moisture barrier pack
and store. Don’t put die reel back
on the rod and set it in the comer. It
will spend the winter collecting
dust and all of the hard work will be
for nothing.
Youl’re not through yet., We
still have a rod that hasn’t been
cleaned and checked for nicks and
cracks in the eyes and ferrules.
Most of today’s rods are graphite or
graphite combination or boron and
al! have ceramic guides. Both of
these combinations are great BUT
are fragile if not properly cared for.
A tiny crack or groove in the ce
ramic eye will cause the line to
break and one day you’ll lose a
good fish. Again. it”s not hard to
replace these items yourself, but
there are people who do it profes
sionally if you had rather not. A
good rod job will cost about S2O -
50 depending on what has to be
done. Once you have the rod
cleaned, checked and repaired, if
necessary, storage for it is just as
important as the reel. If at all pos

sible, store the rod in a rack or even
a gun cabinet to keep them straight
and no weight on them.
With a little bit of effort and el
bow grease, you can make your
equipment last a lot of years. Even
though we fish year round, I will
tear down every reel and clean and
