search.
White is a firm believer in the Leu
kemia Society and believes that a sig
nificant breakthrough will be coming
by the year 2000.
Additionally, he has admired
Lindsey Bell and the fight she has
demonstrated in her battle against the
disease.
“She is my motivation to prepare
myself mentallyand physically”, White
said. ”1 talked with her parents and to
Lindsey, to see if they had any objec
tions to my running in her behalf, and
wearing an arm band with her name on
it, and they had none.
“Several people have made finan
cial contributions, but I will need a lot
more in order to qualify. Checks should
be made to: Leukemia Society, marked
to J ack White’s credit and sent to Jack
White, 109 Surrey Place, Perry, 31069,
or to Cathy and Duren Bell, 100
Lakeview Terrace, Perry, 31069,”
White said.
All funds will go to the Society,
which has been voted one of the top-10
research foundations in the nation for
the last three years. It is the best man
aged foundation, as far as the way they
handle their funds. White has a docu
ment showing how the Leukemia Soci
ety money is spent their account
ability. Some $9,000 was sent back to
Houston County this year for direct aid
to Houston County patients.

Leukemia causes more deaths in
children, ages 2-15, than any other
illness in this country, White said.
Cathy Bell said that Leukemia Ser
vices paid S7OO per year for their
children, ages 2-15, than any other
illness in this country, White said.
Cathy Bell said that Leukemia Ser
vices paid S7OO per year for their
transportation and lodging when they
took Lindsey to Egleston for her treat
ments. Medical insurance covers her
medical expenses.
Lindsey Bell came off chemo
therapy in October 1993. Most re
lapses occur during the first year after
coming off chemotherapy, Cathy Bell
said. Her daughter is fortunate; she
passed the one-year marie with no re
lapse. The next hurdle occurs within
two years. Lindsey is still in remission
and looks like a normal, pretty little
girl.
During the first year after treatment,
Lindsey returned every month for
check-ups. During the second year, she
will go on alternate months. After that,
she will go every six months.
The check-ups involve having her
finger pricked for a blood check. Ad
vances are being made, even some
since her first treatments began.
White said that the GBI supports
ventures like this one, and he gave
Lindsey a coffee mug with the GBI
insignia on it as a memento of this
special run.
