Westfield
drops first
three games
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
Coach Bert Brown’s Westfield
baseball Hornets dropped their
home opener March 8 to Monroe,
then went on the road to
Brookwood in Thomasville
Saturday and dropped a double
header.
Brown said, “We haven’t had
much time to get our hitting eyes,
since most of my squad played
basketball, and have been out just
one week.
“We need to get a little more
consistent at the plate, and that will
come with a few games under our
belts, against live pitching. All
we’ve seen this week is batting
practice pitching. It’ll come
around,” Brown said.
After getting a dozen hits in the
opener against Monroe, in a 9-5
loss, the Hornets just couldn’t find
the holes Saturday in Thomasville,
getting just one hit in the first
game before collecting five in the
nightcap.
All but four of the Hornets
played either varsity or b-team
basketball and Brown is a
basketball assistant. The lack of
time as a team is showing early.
There are some experienced
players on the team, and Brown
expects the Hornets to improve as
they go along.

Gall stone hurts;

Over the past few weeks,
covering basketball tournaments
has been a little painful, and not
because our local teams were all
eliminated.
Let me explain. I guess it started
back during the Georgia Independent
Schools Association playoffs at
Stratford. I began feeling a little
discomfort in the stomach area, but
brushed it off as too much
excitement, combined with fast
food restaurants and hospitality
rooms. A little indigestion, I
surmised. Besides, it would come,
and almost as suddenly, it would go
away.
By the time Perry had reached
the round of 16 the following week
at the Macon Coliseum, the pain
would come and stay a little bit
longer. Gotta have that seen about,
I would say to myself. Let’s get
Perry through the weekend, and
then we’ll do it.
Thursday night, Perry played
Swainsboro at 5:30. There was the
discomfort which by now I was
calling food poisoning. That was
my diagnosis, mind you. And by
the way, it wasn’t right! I got
through the Thursday night game
all right. Not much discomfort once
the game started. Or at least I didn’t
pay that much attention to it.
Then Friday night during the
Perry girls’ game against Jeff
Davis, I felt it coming again. At
halftime, I walked over to the Perry
sideline where athletic trainer Chip
McCarty hangs out. I thought I’d
see if he had something for
indigestion.
He was busy in conversation
with Perry Principal Phil Smith,
and since Chip was drawing
diagrams of his part of the
conversation, I figured it would be
awhile, so I got a cup of ice water
and went back over to the press
table and took my seat.
By the time the second half
started, I had to leave. The pain and
discomfort had gotten too intense to
even concentrate on the game. I
went to my car and took a couple of

over-the-counter pain pills (I prefer
Ibuprofen).
After resting for about 15
minutes, I was able to drive home
to Perry. Or at least as far as my
office at WPGA radio. After a pit
stop there, I finally got home. The
pain was still there, but it didn’t
seem quite as bad. I decided to wait
until the next day to see my doctor.
My decision was not wise.
To shorten the story somewhat,
by the time I did see my doctor, it
was determined that I had passed a
gall stone. Wow! I can just imagine
how it would feel to be hit in the
stomach by a Nolan Ryan fastball.
But I can tell you this, it wouldn’t
hurt any more than a gall stone.
I’ve never be hurt much,
fortunately, so I don’t have much to
relate the pain to. In all of my
sports playing days, I never even
had one sprained ankle. I did get a
hand broken once making a swipe
tag of a runner after the third
baseman threw wide of the bag. I
thought that hurt.
That is, until now. Once, at
basketball practice, on an open field
which joined the nparby
fairgrounds, I kicked what I thought
was an empty gallon can. Turned
out it was full of concrete. I broke a
toe, and I thought that hurt. Until
now.
But this gall stone business will
knock your socks off. It will all be
better in a few days, and I’ll be able
to enjoy the spring sports I’ll be
covering. But let me tell you, I did
not enjoy the basketball
tournaments.
On Thursday, I will undergo
surgery to remove my gall bladder.
The new-fangled laser surgery only
takes about an hour, and recovery
time is minimal. So they tell me.
