Turkey time
draws near
By BEN BAKER
Special to the T-J
Few other southern outdoor
pursuits are as exacting, demanding
and as unforgiving as turkey
hunting.
At the same tine, luck can be a
factor, but the methodical hunter
has a better success ratio from year
to year than the hunter who relies
on luck.
The successful hunter knows
where the birds are. This means
looking and listening.
The best time to do this is during
deer season. Yo*i are already in the
woods and can keep an eye out for
the turkeys.
It's not too late for scouting, but
be aware other hunters are likely in
the woods trying to bag a bird for
themselves.
Oncf the bird is located, the
hunter should be camouflaged from
head to toe and if the eyes are
likewise concealed behind a head
net, so much the better. Veteran
turkey hunters report seeing these
wary birds spot a hunter blink an
eye. With the huge variety of camo
on the market today, it is easy to
match a camo to the terrain. Since
turkey hunting can involve some
stand shifts, it is best to pick a
pattern that is versatile in the
woods.
Any number of calls can also be
found on the market. Some can be
worked by mouth and so involve no
movement. Others need hand
motion (slate calls) and should be
used with care. Other calls
apparently have nothing to do with
turkeys (crow and owl calls) but do
work to locate a gobbler.
Calls are virtually essential and
the most exciting part to veterans.
They will say there is nothing quite
like calling in a huge tom to within
feet of where the hunter is sitting.
Of recent turkey decoys have
become fashionable. These, more
than anything else, require utmost
caution in their use. Turkey
hunters, because they are so well
camouflaged, can be hidden from
other hunters.
A lifelike decoy can be a
tempting target for a hunter moving
toward the calling bird he can't
seem to draw in. Decoys should
then be placed where the hunter is
clearly out of a line of fire.

Bill Moss
Homicide by boat law major step forward
The Georgia Legislature is to be
commended for passing Senate Bill
111 which creates the crime of
vehicular homicide by vessel. It
should be on Gov. Zell Miller's
desk awaiting his signature.
If a boater is found guilty of
reckless boating and causes an
accident that results in a fatality, he
can be sentenced to a maximum
prison sentence of 15 years.
Boating under the influence of
alcohol, speeding and violating
other boating safety laws are
punishable under the bill as well.
And the measure does not cover
just boats. Operators of those
personal watercraft (also known as
jet skis) which are so popular can
be convicted of the same crimes.
With the coming of warm
weather, most Georgia lakes and
rivers will soon be targets of water
lovers from fishermen to
sailboaters.
Unfortunateiy, standard
equipment in many boats of all
sizes is a cooler full of beer. The
combination of warm temperatures
and fresh air has been proven to
speed the affects of alcohol on a
person.
And boats don't have a brake
pedal. So please be careful and
follow the rules of the "road" when
on the water.

Area anglers who frequent the
Flint and Chattahoochee rivers may
notice state fisheries personnel
collecting white bass and striped
bass in the next few weeks.
The white bass are due to go to
the Richmond Hill Fish Hatchery
to be used as brood stock to produce
hybrids. The striped bass will be
sent to the Welaka National Fish
Hatchery for fingerling production.
Large numbers of hybrids will
be reared at the hatcheries in
Dawson and Cordele.
Approximately 500 white bass
and 100 striped bass adults are due
to be collected statewide.
When the fingerlings have
reached about one inch long, they
will be stocked in reservoirs and
costal rivers throughout the state.
Lakes W.F. George (Eufaula),
Andrews, Chehaw, Seminole and
Blackshear will receive some of the
hybrids. Seminole and Blackshear
will also receive striped bass.

They often grow to 70 pounds or
more.
To get that big, they must eat
often and consume large qualities of
food.
Bream and other varieties of
desirable fish top the list of flathead
favorites and that's where the
problem lies.
Fisheries personnel have
discovered that flatheads, apparently
introduced by well-meaning anglers,
have decimated bullheads and
redbreast sunfish in the Altamaha
and Oconee rivers.
Flatheads were put in the
Altamaha in the 1970 s and since
then bullheads have almost been
eliminated and redbreast sunfish
have seen an 80 percent decline in
the last five years alone.
The very rare robust redhorse has
been declining in the Oconee and
fisheries experts believe the flathead
may be at fault.
Plans are under consideration
that would reduce the flathead
population in the Altamaha system,
increase the harvest of the big
catfish and prevent its spread to
other river systems.

While pleasure boaters, lakefront
property owners and the Corps of
Engineers despise it, hydrilla and
milfoil has been proven to be
instrumental in improving fishing
in almost every lake where the
grasses are found.
Lake Seminole is well-known
for its fishery and most Seminole
area guides and fishermen give the
grass a lot of the credit.
The Corps and state fisheries
people apparently don't want the
green beds. Holding pens for grass
carp are being built in some areas
of the lake.

The business community in
Bainbridge depends a great deal on
fishermen coming to the lake, for
tournaments and for fishing for fun.
All I can say is that the
Bainbridge-Decatur County
Chamber of Commerce should look
at Lake Guntersville in north
Alabama if they want to see what
grass carp can do to the economy
that depends of a lake's reputation

Once TV A and a group of

in droves as fishing success
declined. Bass fishing in particular
was hit hard. BASS stopped
coming to Guntersville, which sent
