Local STAR students, teachers named

The Peiry Area Chamber of
Commerce has announced the
STAR students and teachers from
area high schools for this year.
The STAR student is chosen
based on Scholastic Aptitude Tests
and other academic criteria.
Lynward Britt Barrett is repre
senting Perry High School this
year.
Barrett is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lynward Barrett of Perry and
the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Barrett and Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Herbert.
He attended The Westfield
Schools for grades K-9 and entered
Perry High in his sophomore year.
Barrett plans to major in biology
at Emory University at Oxford. He
hopes one day to become an oph
thalmologist.
Susan Pierce, a biology teacher,
was chosen by Barrett as his STAR
teacher.
“I can really relate to her class,”
he said. “She’s an exceptional
teacher.”
Pierce has taught at Perry High
for 18 years.
She received an undergraduate

degree in biology from the
Women’s College of Georgia and a
master’s degree in Science
Education at the University of
Georgia.
She and her husband, David,
have one daughter, Meredith, who
is a sophomore at Collins College in
Roanoke, Va.
“It’s an honor to be chosen ...
especially when there are others
who have a great influence on stu
dent’s academic lives,” Pierce com
mented. “I do plan to keep teach
ing!”
Alfred Lawton Pearson 111 is
STAR student for The Westfield
Schools.
His parents are Al and Mary
Pearson of Fort Valley.
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Alex
McLennon.
He has attended Westfield since
kindergarten and is presently unde
cided on a college or major.
“I”m trying to decide between
Dartmouth. Wake Forest and
Vanderbilt,” he said.
Pearson was nominated for
Governor’s Honors by his STAR
teacher, math instructor Sandra
Cooley. j
Inspiration was one factor in his
choosing Cooley as STAR teacher.
“She has inspired me a great deal
and‘made me enjoy math, a subject
some people really don’t enjoy that
much.”
Cooley and husband, Ben, reside
in Hawkinsville and have a daugh
ter, Rebecca Bowen, who is a
teacher in the Pulaski County
school system.
The Westfield teacher received
her bachelor’s degree at Georgia
Southern and a master’s at Emory
University.
She has been an instructor at
Westfield for 19 of her 29 year
career.
“Being chosen as STAR teacher
is a vote of confidence and I appre
ciate the students,” she said.

Police make arrest in
snatching incident

Perry Police Detective Captain
Mike Pheil said a Houston County
man has been charged with robbery
by sudden snatching after a week
end incident that occurred in Perry.
William Jackson, of a Farr Road
address, was arrested in connection
with a Mar. 18 robbery reported by
a Perry resident.
A 62 year old woman told local
authorities she had her purse taken
from her while in front of her home
located off U.S. 41.
According to Houston County
Sheriff’s investigator Sgt. Jon
Holland, Jackson has also been
charged with two counts of robbery
by snatching and one count of
armed robbery.
Those charges stem from inci
dents that have happened around
the county in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Perry Fire Chief
Gary Hamlin said arson is the sus
pected cause of a weekend fire.

poured flammable liquid over a car.
The vehicle was parked in the
front yard of 722 Patterson St.
around 1 a.m. Saturday and then
“trailed it across the yard some 25
feet. We’re assuming they lit it off
from the ground,” he said.
Firemen were able to contain the
blaze so that damage to the vehicle
and yard was minimal.
