Westfield honors basketball teams
at annual winter sports banquet

Basketball players at Westfield
Schools were honored during the
annual winter sports banquet March
13.
Jennifer Smith, who was also
named to the Georgia Independent
Schools Association all-region and
all-state teams, was named the Lady
Hornet Most Valuable Player.
Jake Walls, named to the GISA
all-region and all-state teams. w»as
named the Hornet Most Valuable
Player.
Windy Biggers received the
Senior Captain's Award for the
Lady Hornets. Other award
recipients were Stephanie Barr. Best
Hustler; Mary Katherine Walker,
Most Improved Player, and Julee
Fryer, the 3-D Award.
Named to the all-region team
were Smith and Fryer. Walker was
honorable mention all-region.
Smith was named all-state while
Fryer was named honorable
mention all-state.
B-team Best Player awards went
to Jennifer Stewart and Laura
Posey.
Hornets named to the all-region
team included Walls, Brian Nash.
Matt Sheplev and Todd Rigdon.

Horseshoe Pitching Tourney

The Glen Moulder Memorial
Horseshoe Pitching Tournament
was held at Stone Mountain on
March 11.
There was a total of 33 players
in the tournament. Joanne and
Jerome Kennedy, Marvelle and
Perkins Jenkins were players from
(lie Perry Horseshoe Pilchers Club.
Joanne won first and Perkins won
second in their class, which was

The World Horseshoe Pitching
Tournament will be held July 24 -
Aug. 5. at (he Georgia National
Fairgrounds and Agricenter. The
tournament will consist probably in
excess of 2,000 players. Perry will
be lull of people for those two
weeks Please plan to attend and see
some great professional horseshoe
pitching.

in track season opener

The Perry High Lady Panthers
finished second in the first track
meet of the year last week.
Americus took first place in the
three-way meet with 62.5 points.
Perry was second with 54 points
while Macon County finished third
with 16.5 points.
PHS track coach Glover Gibson
said he was particularly pleased
with the showing of distance
runners on his team.
“I’ve been here 25 years and this
is the best group of distance runners
we’ve ever had at one time,”
Gibson said.
He hopes to use the scheduled
regular season track meets to
prepare for the subregion meet to be
held during April.
“There are many young girls on
the team. I hope they will continue
to improve during every meet while
the seniors develop their leadership
potential.” Gibson said

NO REPLACEMENT Perry Mayor Jim Worrall wasn't
trying out for a place as a replacement pitcher for the
Atlanta Braves. He was throwing out the first pitch for
Perry High School's home opener against Macon
County last Friday, won by Perry 10-4. The Panthers'
catcher is Thad Cook (15).
