Panthers come from behind to reach tournament finals

GRAY The Perry High Panthers reached
the finals of the Bank ot Gray Christmas
Tournament here Dec 22 by defeating two
other Georgia High School Association Class
AA teams the hard way by coming from
behind
Against Morgan County Dec 19. the come
Irom-behmd effort wasn t nearly as difficult as
the effort needed Dec 20 against Mary
Persons
Morgan County grabbed the lead tour times
early in the game before the Panthers put
together a solid run at the end ot the quarter to
take the lead tor good
Perry look a 5-2 lead then watched Darren
Ballard convert a three-point field goal for the
Bulldogs to tie the score Derrick Ballard
tipped the ball off the glass at the 5 19 mark to
give Morgan County a 7-5 lead
Again. Perry tied only to tall behind. 10-7
lead Dannorris Harvey got I’erry right back in
the game on a baseline shot and a tree throw
The teams then swapped baskets before
Derrick Ballard gave Morgan County their last
lead of the night at 13-12 with * 49 left in the
lirst quarter
At that point. Perry opened a seven-point
run to close the quarter up 19-1 < Alter spotting
the Bulldogs two baskets at the start ol the sec
ond quarter Perry got a goal from the lane by
Johnny Watkins and a three-pointer from
Holmes to go ahead 24-17
Dominique Diejuste banked the ball oil the
backboard lor a Bulldog goal, then Pcrrv
picked up a tree throw Iroin Harvey, a tip buck

night, some Irom Mary Persons High School of
Forsyth, the Panthers again started very slowly
Andre /diner opened scoring for Mary

the opening up but Watkins tied the score at 2 on
a pair ol free throws iwo dozen seconds later
With a baseline field goal and two free
throws irom Mark Webct another baseline
drive by /diner and a tip oil a rebound by
Xellner. the Bulldogs took a IH-2 lead at the
* s 2 mark of the lirst quartet
Thomas was good lot two goals driving the
lane belore /diner connected again to give the
Bulldogs a 12 6 lead at the 2 4 s maik

answered with a baseline shot before Jamario

With 12 seconds left m the quarter. Holmes
was fouled in the lane a he shot The basket
counted and hi converted the tree throw to

Perry took the lead for the first lime a few
seconds later when Clark stole the ball and
raced the length of the court for a lay-up
Twelve seconds later, Mays gave Mary
Persons the lead for the last time that night on
a tip off a rebound Perry got seven quick
points on a basket by Harvey, a free throw by
Thomas and baskets by Thomas and Clark to
lake a 2K-22 lead with 3:04 left in the half
By the end of the quarter, that lead had
extended to <6-29 Perry raced ahead during
the third quarter and when Harvey converted a
baseline shot with 5:12 showing, the Panthers
had a 45- 31 lead W'hen Watkins made good on
a jumper in the lane with two minutes left in
the quarter. Perry had a SH-37 lead
Mary Persons downed host Jones County
73-54 in the opening round to reach the semifi
nals of the eight-team tournament
