County takes legal action to stop
sludge hauling until fees are paid

The Houston County Commissioners have peti
tioncd the court lor an injunction to stop the Macon*
Bibb County Water Authority from disposing ol its
sludge on Houston County tarm fields, a practice that
has been under way lor several years in the southern
part ol the county, between Cirovamu and Elko.
The reason tor the legal action, according to
County Commission Chairman J Sherrill Stafford, is
that the Macon officials are ignoring a Houston
County ordinance which requires that anyone
engaged in land application ol sludge in Houston
County pay the county a fee ol SI for every ton ol
sludge applied to local sites

Burial was in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery
Mrs Goode, a native ol Terrell County and the widow ol William
Wootson Goode, lived in Bronwood lor many years. She was a home
maker and an active member ot Bronwood Baptist Church where she
served as W.M l president and circle chairman, and was a Sunday
School teacher lor over 50 years She also attended and served in the
B YPI . B TC . Church Training. Sunbeams. Girls Auxiliary and
Vacation Bible School She lived in Perry for the last three years
Survivors are her daughters. Billie Goode Mosteller of Perry and
Dorothy Goode Willingham ol Camilla; a son. Vassar Goode ot
Bronwood: brothers and sisters. Wiley “Doc" Chambless. George
Chambless. Ike Chambless. Mary C Goolsby and Belle C". Cannon, all
ol Dawson; live grandchildren. 12 great-grandchildren, and one great
great-grandchild.

Attorney Mike Long earlier (hi* month, the Macon
Water Authority has not only not paid the lees, but
has “repeatedly refused to send reports to (the
Commissioners) setting forth the amount ol sludge
applied in Houston County
Sludge is the treated residue generated at waste
water treatment plans It is used on larm fields as ter
lilizcr The sludge application in southern Houston
County, which lakes place on private land owned by
farmers, has been a cause ol concern to some resi
dents of that area, and has been the subject ol sever
al meetings between residents and the County
