Diet is the food you eat, planned or not
In m\ Wellness class and Nutrition class at Georgia Mililarv College. I
teach the definition for diet as "foods you eal" So, il someone says to me "I
started this great diei today." My philo
sophical response is, "Oh. it you started
a diet then what have you been eating
all these years ’’’
You don'l go on a diet What you do
is change your eaiing patterns to include
or exclude different foods usually
deemed had, unhealthy, fattening, or
forbidden With this energy-saving pro
gram you are not going any where much
less "on a diet” All you arc doing is eating more foods from the produce see
mm and le\c from the rest of the grocery store' Plus, you'll learn to tell lime,
know whai kind of food you're eating, and maybe see a change in your gen
eral appearance and energy levels
What works for me may not work for you Be careful Don't go overboard
and become fanatical Be prudent Aware In tunc And most of all. don't
evei weigh yourself ever again the rest of your life
A fad diet is something cither pay through the nose tor. you go on for a
few weeks, decide u doesn't work, go off of it. then hear how bad or fantas
tic it is on Oprah the next day Examples ol lad diets arc the Cabbage Soup
diet. Prmkin. Beverly Hills diet. Jenny Craig, some sort ol devices that work
on the hypothalamus gland, or maybe those diets in really small print in the
National Enquirer Either way you look at a diet the best way to lose weigh!
and remain healths is to load your shopping cart (or buggy it you're from the
South) with lots of fresh Iruits and fresh vegetables
Todav someone told me the Fit For Life program was the worst diet on a
fad diet list Of course it was the worst = because it's not a diet Pure and
simple It's not something you'll go on then lump off ol when you lose your
weight or gel bored It's an energy saving lifestyle and a choice you'll make
whether to adopt il for a lifetime or abuse it and be a yo-yo dieter
Can vou run a marathon ’ That's a bit more than 2b miles Huh ' I can i
E-.very time you eal foods in the wrong combination ai the wrong lime ol the
dav you're asking your body to expend as much energy digesting that food
as il takes to run anything from a I<)K <b 2 tnilcsi to a lull Boston Marathon 1
Was ihe hx>d really worth that kind ol energy expenditure ’ Was the taste and
tradition of that food really worth asking your metabolic cn/ymes ( these
critters actually operate your body and keep youi metabolism upi to stop
their cellular functions (it’s not a car phone), store il as body I at. then run to
ihc stomach to digest your gotta-have foods ’
These pixir things won’t go back to process more nutrients, they II die in
the stomach and gel excreted by your kidneys or colon Was yout food real
ly worth this waste of energy ’

Storing up at tf>e new i'ghts shining
down or. the field Perry head baseball
coach lee Whatley can t help but get just
o little sentimental
"Its looks kind of like the field of
Dreams doesn't it?" he asked "This is
going to be nice "
As the Panthers get ready to start their
regula' season night games wont be the
only things that are different around the
Panther Pit Whatiey said he s noticed a
whole new attitude about his team this year
"I see a competitiveness that I haven »
seen since I came here two yeais ago the
former Tattnal Square assistant coach said
"last year we had a few guys who
were out there just to make themselves
look good." he said “But we don't have
that this time we ve got a bunch of guys
who are real team players and that
makes a difference '
In oddition to team chemistry,
Whatley realizes that the Panthers will
also need a healthy dose of effective
pitching if they want to improve on last
year's 5-1 6 record
last season, Perry's offense was
impressive averaging 7 runs a game and
hitting 342 as a team, but they failed to
reach, the Qlayoffs If this year is to be any
different Whatley knows it will have to
come from the pitching mound
Chris Simmons and Brandon Farmer
two of the team s four seniors are right
handed pitchers with some experience
The other righthander is |unior Tripp
Morath who was on the mcund when
p erry opened up the regular season in
Dublin Feb 24 Cloy Talton will serve as
the sole lefty on the starting rotation
Perry senior Wade Stewart will play
secona base while Billy Terry will hold
down first base
The p anthers will pioy their first game
at home this weekend when they host a
five-team spring warm-up tournament
featuring all four of the Houston County
teams and Jones County
Soccer in full swing
Uum Si o» Khm.ntx
While most spring sports wait until
March to get their season started the
Perry High soccer teams hove taken the
early lead
In his fourth year at Perry head coach
Rob Zeli and his boy s squod started their
season by competing in the Upson4.ee
Jamboree on feb 14
The 111 Panthers beat Winder
Barrow tied Pike County and lost to
Upson Lee
Up next lor Perry is the Colquitt
County Classic where they will take on
