When the new weather station was installed a tew
weeks ago at tilv hall. Perry Mayor Jim Worrall said he
would often glance
out his window to
ujUh lhc The station collects wind speed,
anemomelei 'Pin in . , M
the brcc/e wind direction and rainfall in hourly
He was not the increments. From that the wind chill
only one interested, is determined.
he added
"A large bird
would perch nearby and watch the station every day for
hours on end " said Worrall.
The bird does not seem to be interested anymore, but
Harold Deal, utilities superintendent for the City ot Perry,
who has been collecting weather-related information for
years, is.
The weather station will help keep more accurate data
that can be used in situations such as predicting how much
natural gas city of Perry residents will need on a cold,
winter night." said Deal
Residents receive their natural gas supply Irom a large
pipeline that serves several other cities.
When the weather is expected to be extremely cold,
natural gas is rationed to these cities.
"If we (the City) go over a certain amount during the
curtailment period, we can be fined." said Deal
Data collected from the station will help predict how
much gas will be needed so Deal can make sure the city
does not use over a specified amount
In the past. PPG Industries would switch to propane use
during these periods, instead of using the natural gas. said
Deal
That is because the PPG plant could use to much gas on
a cold night as the w hole rest of the city, he added
What type data does the station collect?
"Wind speed, wind direction and raintall in hourly
increments." said Deal Also, wind chill is determined
Deal is able to read this data from a small device on his
desk which stores the information and can download the
information into a computer
Information on any given day or time period can be
charted and printed
Deal said he is looking loiward to collecting and com
paring this data over the next lew years
"It is an interesting process.” he said
