Houston Lake stocked with bass
Both fishermen and proper
ty owners around Houston
Lake are getting excited as
waters refill the lake. The
water is about 5 feet deep now
and the lake should be totally
full by mid-August.
The construction company
is using a gradual filling
process so they can check for
problems as the water rises.
The lake level should be
approximately the same as
before the flood and will be
about 11 l k feet deep at the dam.
Parking spots are under
construction and there will be
about 20 spaces for vehicles.
The lake will be used for
primarily fishing recreation.
The county has already adopt
ed local regulations which ban
swimming, firearms, alcohol
beverages, skiing and jet skis
from the lake All boats are
allowed on the lake but they
are restricted to idle speed
only, which means no wake or
less than 5 miles per hour, says
Steve Engle with the Houston
County Commissioners.
According to Les Agcr,
Regional Fisheries Supervisor
for the Department of Natural
Resources' Fort Valley office,
the summer time is not the best
time to restock the lake.
"We prefer to stock fish in
the wintertime so all the
restocked fish will be ready to
spawn in the spring, but
because the lake is filling up
now we went ahead and put in
approximately 20.000 bass ftn
gerlings."
These fish will grow rapidly
and within a year, anglers
should be able to catch small
bass. Remember that a keeper
bass must be at least 12 inches
in length or it must be returned
to the lake. The bass will
weigh a pound or so within 18
months and good fishing for
them will continue for many
years.
Unfortunately, the DNR is
unable to stock bream or cat
fish now because they arc
unavailable. They also can’t be
stocked next spring because
the small bream and catfish
would be eaten by the bass.
Ager said this is not a major
problem however because
there are plenty of native fish
in the lake already and others
will work their way in from
feeder streams. Bullhead cat

"There will eventually be
lots of fish in the lake,” says
Ager.
I asked if the lake might be
suitable for hybrid bass and
stripers. “No,” said Ager,
"hybrid bass require a shad
population to feed and such a
forage base can’t exist in
Houston Lake. Shad require
green algae to feed upon and
there won’t be enough in
Houston Lake to support them.
Houston Lake is going to be
more like a large beaver pond
than a large reservoir.” So
while the lake won’t support
hybrids, trophy bass will be
available in a few years.
In the future the fishing
behind the dam is going to be
very limited. This is due to the
large spillway that will result
in shallow water conditions
behind Uie dam. There proba
bly won’t be any deep pockets
of water with good fishing in
the main lake, this should not
be a problem.
Also, if you fish around the
Houston Lake Golf Course,
watch for flying balls, espe
cially around the wooden
bridge near the clubhouse. As
golfers tee off, many balls
moving at very high speed pelt
the water and you might get
hit. Asa golfer and fisherman
at Houston Lake in tlie past,
I’ve found myself on both ends
of this scenario at various
times.
You might be wondering if
the lake between the 10 and 18
tees will be open to fishing. To
get into this part of the lake
you would have to pass under
the wooden bridge at the ?oth
tee, which is currently blocked
by crossmember supports.
That decision probably has not
been made yet by the commis
sioners, but this would be a
risky place to fish, even if open
to boat travel. As we move into
the future this and probably
other issues will be addressed.
Personally, I’m glad to see
Houston Lake refilling as a
public lake. It benefits both the
lake property owners and the
general public who can now
fish in the lake, so this is a
win-win situation. Let’s enjoy
the lake.
