PHS band takes high
honors during Phenix
City competition

Members of the Perry High
School Pride ol the Crossroads
marching hand picked up several
honors during the Phcmx City
Invitational Marching Contest
here Oct. 17.
Joe Hutcheson, director of the
Perry High hand, said the hand
won second place among class
AAA schools. The color guard
was first of five in the category
while the majorettes were third
and the drum majors were sec
ond.
Hutcheson said hands are clas
sified different for marching
music competition than they are
for many other competitions.
Perry is a Class AA school for
competition in Georgia High
School Association events, based
on the number of students attend
ing the school.

Perry is a Class AAA band, based
on the number of horn players in
the band.
Some 26 bands participated in
the festival and competition.
Hutcheson said the difference
between a band festival and a
competition is “in a festival, a
band is rated good, excellent or
superior. All bands could end up

“We are very pleased with this
result." Hutcheson said “We
were competing with every other
size band there in the overall
competition, including bands
with more than 200 members.
Our results were very good."
This is only the second year
the Perry hand has been competi
tive. Before that, the band partic
ipated in festivals for superior
and excellent ratings.
"During these two years. Perry
has never finished less than sec
ond." Hutcheson said.
“I am very impressed with the
program in Perry." said David
Enele. the new associate director
of bands at Perry High. "Not
many bands in Georgia can boast
the record that we have after one
full year of competition."
The Pride of the Crossroads
will complete the competition
season Oct. 31 in Statesboro.
