development

Members of ihe Houston
County Development Authority
approved the SI7S.(HK) sale price
of a 50-acre lot in the Perry
Allied Business Park during their
Oct. 29 meeting at the Houston
Lake Country Club. The
sale.however.is not yet finalized.
'The property is slated for use
as the building site for liquid
asphalt storage containers” Tim
Martin, executive director for the
Houston County Development
Authority, said. The City of
Perry , half owner of the land, pre
viously approved the sale of the
property. The property sale is
just one of several industrial
development activities discussed
during the meeting.
In other business, Martin
reported American Real Estate,
which has acquired 2,200 acres
of property along Perry Parkway
from the Northrop Grumman
Corp.. is still marketing the site.
When American Real Estate
bought the Northrop property 15
months ago, they leased back to
Northrop 400,000 square feet of
the manufacturing space, Martin
said, adding that the lease
arrangement leaves about
350.000 square feel of finished
space available for other use.
Northrop leased the space for
10 years and is manufacturing a
variety of aircraft doors and
frame parts, under contract with
the Boeing Cos.
Also discussed at the meeting
were anew warehouse which is
under construction near Watson
Boulevard in the Advanced
Technology Park in Warner
Robins and anew shopping cen
ter anchored by a Kroger super
market, which is also under con
struction. near that location.
Martin said work on the ware
house will begin before
Christmas. He said the building
could be used to store computer
hardware and software for
Georgia schools. Costs for the
structure are not yet available.
A major project currently
under way is the new industrial
part, at Booth Road in Warner
Robins. The property is located
about a hall mile west of Anchor
Glass and borders the railroad
track in that area.
The $1.2 million development
cost will be equally split between
the City of Wamer-Robins and
the Federal Economic
Development Association,
according to Martin.
Ground breaking should take
place on the 206-acre lot before
the end of the year, Martin said.
Perry Mayor James Worrall
said the 1998 Georgia National
Fair at the Georgia National
Fairgrounds and Agricenter drew
361,125 visitors.
Worrall also said anew
Interstate-75 exit ramp connect
ing the south entrance of the
Fairgrounds with the highway is
being built.
Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce President Chris
Kinnas reported the annual
retreat sponsored by the chamber
will be Nov. 7 on St. Simons
Island. Those attending will
develop 1999 chamber goals.
Kinnas said participants will
include chamber directors and
committee chairs, city officials
and local business leaders. About
30 participants are expected.
They will stay at the King and
Prince hotel.
Kinnas also reminded mem
bers of some upcoming events:
Former Warner Robins Air
Logistics Center Commander
retired Maj. Gen. Ron Smith will
speak at the Good Morning Perry
Breakfast, held in the Fairview
Room of the Georgia National
Fair Grounds Nov. 25. Kinnas
said there is no admission charge.
The Business After Hours
social sponsored by members of
the Chamber of Commerce, will
be held in the Henderson Village
Bed and Breakfast in Henderson
beginning 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3.
The Development Authority
met at Houston Lake to allow
members to host an Established
Industry Appreciation Day fol
lowing the meeting.
Following a round of golf,
with a shotgun start for the 66
participants, a barbecue dinner
was served to 100 guests. The
evening concluded with a presen
tation on the value of manufac
turing by Ron Robinson, former
deputy commissioner of the
Georgia Department of Industry,
Trade and Tourism.
