Hornets close on Region 1-AAA championship
Bv PHIL CLARK
Times-Jihirnai Sh>rts
The Westfield Hornets
moved a step closer to the
Georgia Independent School
Association region I AAA foot
ball championship Oct 30 at the
Hornets’ Nest with an impres
sive 35-20 win over the
Stratford Eagles.
Stratford came into the game
sporting the GISA's best scoring
defense, but Westfield wasted
little time taking control of the
game.
Westfield got on the board on
their second possession after
Jacob Walker’s 30-yard return of
James Poe’s punt gave the
Hornets excellent field position
at the Stratford 23-yard line. The
Hornets, who had kept the ball
on the ground for three running
plays on their first possession,
went to the air on first down and
Trevor Jones hit Daniel Weir
with a 2!-yarder to the Eagles'
two yard line.
Jared Shell punched it over on
the next play behind outstanding
blocking from Westfield’s offen
sive line. Nathan Skinner’s point
after kick was low, and the
Hornets settled for a quick 6-0
lead against the third ranked
Eagles.
Westfield was facing the
third ranked team in the GISA
for the third straight game, hav
ing beaten Brentwood and
Mount de Sales when each
enjoyed that ranking Westfield
is ranked second in the GISA
coaches' poll
The Hornets continued to
contain the Eagles’ offense, led
by freshman running back Steve
Sovie. and quickly took advan
tage of a Stratford turnover with
1:39 left in the first quarter. On
a third-and-two from the
Stratford 43, quarterback Tyler
Fleming fumbled and the
Hornets’ Matthew Hulbert fell
on the loose ball.
Going back to the ground
attack, the Hornets picked up
back to back first downs on a 6-
yard run by Shell and Walker's
15 yarder behind a Robby
Heaton block put the ball at the
Eagles’ 14-yard line.
After Shell picked up four.
Tate Parker burst into the end
zone frorri 10 yafds out just two
plays into the second quarter.
With Heaton lined up in the
backfield, Trevor Jones hit the
big senior in the right comer of
the end zone for a two point con
version and Westfield took a 14-
0 lead.
The Eagles mounted their
most impressive drive of the
first half on their next posses
sion. moving the ball from their
own 32 all the way to the
Westfield 8-yard line, covering
50 yards in eight running plays
highlighted by a 22-yard pickup
by senior Mark Tudor.
Westfield’s defense stepped
up with two big plays as Will
Holt threw Tudor for a 4-yard
loss, then freshman linebacker
Chance Jones read a pass play
perfectly and stepped in front of
intended receiver Andrew Cook
at the Westfield 5-yard line and
picked off Fleming's pass.
A clip wiped out an excellent
return, but the Hornets were able
lo take advantage of the
Stratford turnover for the second
time in the half as Shell picked
up 65 yards in an 89-yard,
scven-plav touchdown drive.
Shell's 46 yard touchdown
scamper came two plays after a
15-yard Stratford penally, and
Skinner's point alter made it 2 I
- Westfield with 3:04 left in the
lust hall.
Stratford answered the touch
down with their first score of the
game, taking just five plays and
I 44 to score on an 11-yard
strike from Flemming to Poe.

TOUCHDOWN Westfield running back Jared
Shell (24) steps behind a block by Gary Virden (15)
to keep a 46-yard scoring play alive. The Hornets
Savoi had a 38-yarder in the
drive. Matthew Terry's kick
made it 21-7 with 1:14 left in the
half.
This was enough lime for the
Hornets to regain the momentum
heading to the break The
Hornets got the ball at their 40
after Terry's kickoff went out of
bounds. Walker got 22 on first
down, and on third-and-eight at
the Stratford 38. Jones connected
with Ernest Greene for 12 yards
and a first down at the Eagles’
26.
On the next play. Jones found
Walker in the flats and the fleet
junior juked Poe out of position
on a great move at the 15-yard
line, and went into the end zone
untouched for the 26-yard score.
Skinner was again perfect on the
point after and the Hornets led
28-7 at the half.
Both teams were able to move
the ball in the second half as
Stratford began to chew up large
chucks of yardage on the running
of Savoi and Tudor and the pass
ing of Flemming. The Eagles
scored on their first possession
of the second half after a
Westfield punt, cutting the
Hornets’ lead to 28-14. Tudor
picked up the final 12 yards on a
12-play, 79-yard drive.
As they had done near the end
of the first half, the Westfield
offense answered the score with
one of their own to reclaim the
three-touchdown lead. Parker’s
17-yard kickoff return behind a
Cole Dunaway block gave the
Hornets possession at their own
32, setting up an eight-play scor
ing drive, featuring rutis of 21,
10 and eight yards by Shell, and
a nine-yard run by Parker that set
up
Skinner made it 35-14 with 3:21
left in the third quarter.
Stratford’s final score came
with 9:46 left in the game on a
26-yard strike from Flemming to
Terry. Terry's kick was wide on
the point after try, and the final
score was on the board, with the
Hornets picking up an impres
sive 75-20 win over what coach
Ronnie Jones called "statistically
the best scoring defense in the
GISA this year."
Coach Rennie Atkinson told
the defense. "You showed p lot
of character out there tonight.
They moved the hall on us. but
we stopped them when we had to
with big defensive plays."

downed Stratford to remain in first place in GISA
Region 1 -AAA. Joining them are Ben Brannen (74),
Jake Walker (18), ana Tate Parker 20.
Citing the outstanding effort
by the offensive line. Jones said
he was "Surprised at the num
ber of points scored in the
game, hut the people up front
kept opening up holes, and our
backs kept finding them for
good yardage."
Jones also had praise for the
defense, led by senior Robby
Heaton, whom Jones calls the
“best defensive player I've seen
since I’ve been here. What he
can do on the football field
defies belief sometimes. He can
go from sideline to sideline, and
he can also bowl over offensive
linemen and stop the play in the
backfield. He’s awesome.”
The Hornets, w ith the w in. arc
a game away from the region
I AAA championship, but they
have already established home
field advantage for the state
playoffs, which begin here in
two weeks.
