Report of 1998 activities
jects began in 1998. The new inter
state interchange located below
the Fairgrounds and the extension
of Perry Parkway into the Perry
Industrial Park both started this
year and will help the economic
growth of Perry well into the
future.
State Representative Larry
Walker also announced that the
State Department of
Transportation will pay to four lane
Houston Lake Road from
Centerville to Perry. He also
announced that the southern leg of
the Perry Parkway will also be
funded and built ahead of sched
ule. All in all, Houston County will
have over SIOO million in road
work done by the state in the next
several years.
Business P.L.U.S.- This com
mittee worked diligently this year
to get a mentor program for small
and emerging businesses going
here in Perry. Plans are on track
for beginning this program in
earnest in 1999. With the help of
Clyde Connie at Macon College,
the Chamber did publish an infor
mational Tb-Do List for people
starting a new business. It is now
available at the Chamber office.

who advances to state competition.

STAR Student/Tteacher We
cospojisored the local level of this
state program with the W&ner
Robin* Chamber of Commerce on
February 27. The Chambers pre
sented SSOO savings bonds to all of
the STAR students and teachers.
The finalists and winners also
recei\ted gifts and product certifi
cates from area businesses.
Education Appreciation
Eventjs the committee held
appreciation dinners for the
Hous|on County Board of
Eduction and the Westfield Board
of Directors on March 10 and April
30. Tlv event allows chamber lead
ers to fretwork with education lead
ers ori issues and update them on
chamber education projects.
M.H. Cheek Scholarship
The dommittee administers this
scholarship, that began with a con
tributbn by Mr. Earl Cheek. The
$l5O scholarship is given annually
to a Berry Middle School English
student on awards day. The school
selects the recipient.
Students of the Month The
Perry High School and Westfield
students of the month were hon
ored \yith plaques and recognized
along with their parents at our
bimonthly “Good Morning Perry"
breakfasts.
Georgia Scholar Reception-
We cosponsored the Georgia
Scholar Reception with the Warner
Robins Chamber of Commerce on
May $6. The event honored the
Houstbn County Students which
received this State designation.
New Tfeacher Luncheons
We cosponsored a new teacher lun
cheon for the Houston County
School System on August 11. Over
100 new teachers were honored
and presented with welcome pack
ets from the Perry Area Chamber
of Commerce. On August 19, new
teachers from the Westfield System
were honored as well.

Adult Literacy The Perry
and Warner Robins Chamber of
Commerce in conjunction with
Middle Georgia Tfechnical Institute
established the Houston County
Joint Certified Literate
Community Program. This pro
gram and its board of directors will
guide the County in reducing its
illiteracy rate over the next ten
years. Houston County officially
became a Certified Literate
Community in 1998.
Youth Apprenticeship
Program The Perry Area
Chamber of Commerce officially
endorsed the Houston County
Youth Apprenticeship Program.
The program establishes local
apprenticeship programs and gives
students on the job training. The
program is administered through
Middle Georgia Tech and the
Houston County Board of
Education.
Tfeacher of the Year The
Chamber helped sponsor gifts and
awards to the nominees and win
ner of the Houston County Teacher
of the Year.
Board of Directors The
Houston County Board of
Education Superintendent and the
Westfield Headmaster are ex-offi
cio members of the Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors.
They present updates on educa
tion issues at these meetings.
Education Sponsors The
committee raised over $3500 this
year in corporate sponsorships to
help fund education projects and
establish the new Youth
Leadership Perry program. None of
this would have been possible
without the help of our 1998
Education Sponsors.

Reception for New
Superintendent- In June the
Education Committee sponsored a
reception at the Perry Welcome
Center for our new Houston
County School Superintendent, Dr.
Charles Holloway.
Military Affairs
Chairperson: David Pierce,
Houston County Magistrate Court
Purpose: Provide support to
Warner Robins Air Force Base to
keep it viable as the economic
engine that drives middle Georgia.
This committee is not funded by
the general fund, but by the thirty
individuals that serve on the com
mittee.

Recruitment The Middle
Georgia Military Affairs
Committee, under the direction of
the Warner Robins Air Force Base
Public Affairs Office assigns the
Perry Military Affairs Committee
membership slots. We currently
have 30 committee positions. One
slot was added for 1997. Additional
slots may be added with approval
of the WRAFB/PA. The number of
slots also determines our pro rata
share of expenses incurred by the
Middle Georgia Military
Committee.
