B-team boys to an 18-12 first
quarter lead over Central
Fellowship Christian Academy
Jan. 22 at the Hornets’ Nest.
Chance Jones scored 11 in the
fourth quarter to hold off a
CFCA comeback as the team

Coach Rennie Atkinson used
the 10th different starting lineup
in the 11 games to pick up the
team’s second win of the vear over
CFCA 67-58.
After Brannen’s first quarter
heroics, the Hornets outscored
the visitors 10-6 in the second

a 48-31 third quarter lead.
But the Lancers weren’t down
yet. Under a barrage of three
pointers, the team climbed right
back into the game, and
Westfield had to held on for the
win by converting free throws
down the stretch as the Lancers
sent them to the foul line to stop
the clock.
Jones answered by hitting
eight of 10 plus a three-pointer,
and Brannen, Nathan Skinner

Bulldogs come back,
block Hornet win
By PHIL CLARK

Getting balanced scoring from
a trio of sophomores, the
Westfield Hornets battled the
George Walton Bulldogs on even
terms through a hard fought first
half at Jan. 23 at the Hoi nets’
Nest.
Daniel Weir had four points in
the first quarter, then the two
other sophomores, Ernest Greene
and Will Holt, joined Weir to
score 17 of Westfield’s 19 second
quarter points.
The Hornets led at the half
33-27, with a great defensive
effort against the Bulldogs’ potent
attack. Westfield was playing for
the second game in a row without
leading rebounder and shot
blocking specialist Brian Hartley,
whose offense was coming
around, with a 65-point, three
game spree the week before his
illness.
The offensive pace slowed for

The Central Fellowship
Christian Academy Lady Lancers
B-team girls beat the Westfield
Lady Bees 38-28 at the Hornets’
Nest Jan. 22, the second win of
the year for the Lady Lancers
over Westfield.
In. a typically low scoring
game, CFCA gained a 20-14
advantage at halftime, but
Westfield had closed the gap to
five points, 28-23, by the end of
three quarters.
Back-to-back baskets by Katie
Byrd finished off a seven-point
Westfield run in the third, and
brought the team to within one
point of the lead at 22-21, but
that was as close as they could get.

Freshman Chance Jones scored
16 of his game-high 30 points in
the decisive fourth quarter Jan. 23
at the Hornets’ Nest as the
Westfield boys B-team rallied to
beat visiting George Walton 57-
50.
Jones, who hit 14-of-15 from
the foul line in the game, hit twice
from three-point range in the
fourth quarter and Will Holt con
verted a crucial three-point play as
the Hornets took their first lead
with 2:12 left in the game.
Jones’ second trey of the quar
ter pulled the teams even at 41-
41, but the Bulldogs refused to
give up the lead. With 2:12 left in
the game, a Jones basket gave
Westfield a 49-48 lead.
After point guard Kory
Kitchens hit one from the foul
line, Holt rebounded the second
shot, and Jones drew a foul as he
drove to the basket. His two con
versions gave Westfield a 52-48
lead and by the end of the game,
the Hornets had increased it to
seven with the 57-50 victory.

Lady Panthers gain split with
Bleckley, Dodge in region play
By ALLISON KENT
For the Time-s-lournal
Coach Max Vickers and his
Lady Panthers slammed Bleckley
County last week 50-39 after
Bleckley had a one-point lead at
the half.
Kjystal Brown led the attack
with 16 points while Brandie
Thomas trailed close with 13.
Bonnie Fagan and Karisa
Banister each added six and
Jessica Green had five. Marquita
Ragin and Kiki Woodard scored
two each.
The Lady Panthers had a
more difficult time against the
Dodge County Squaws Jan. 22,
falling 42-33. The Squaws are
ranked second in Georgia High
School Association Class AA
and arc undefeated in Region 4-
AA play.
Brown, who was seriously
injured in the last minute of play,
was again high scorer for the
Panthers with 14. Thomas had 8,
just seven points while the
Bulldogs were scoring 14 to take
a 41-40 lead. George Walton
scored the first eight points of the
third quarter.
The fourth quarter was the
most disappointing for Westfield,
though. The Hornets, with a
chance to put the game away,
could make just two of 11 from
the foul line while the Bulldogs,
with just 12 points of their own in
the fourth, pulled out the 53-50
win, the final margin inflated
slightly on an uncontested basket
at the buzzer by the Bulldogs’
Will Thompson.

10-2 lead, but five points by Holt
and four free throws by Jones kept
•the game to 14-9 after a quarter.
By halftime the Hornets cut
the lead to one point, with Holt
and Jones again supplying the
scoring punch, Kitchens directing
the attack smoothly, and Ben
Brannen and Wes Faulkner going
to work on the backboards.
George Walton came back in
the third, though, and reclaimed
the lead by outscoring the
Hornets 12-7 to take a 38-32 lead
after three quarters.
Westfield’s 25-point explosion
in the fourth, including a 10-2
run at the end of the game, pulled
out win number 10 for Rennie
Atkinson’s young Hornets, who
are now an outstanding 10-2 for
the season. Jones’ 30 points was
the most by a Hornet player at
any level this season.

Lady Hornets hold
on for region win
By PHIL CLARK
Times-lournal Sports
How much of a lead is com
fortable? Don’t pose that ques
tion to Westfield Lady Hornets’
coach Billy Sellers. He probably
wouldn’t have an answer.
Sellers watched his team take a
25-10 halftime lead behind Lina
Arnold’s 10 points, but before you
could say Central Fellowship
Christian Academy, the Lady
Lancers had wiped out all but five
points of the Westfield lead in the
third quarter.
The Lady Hornets rallied with
baskets by Rachel Moore and
Amanda jones, and regained a
nine-point lead by the end of the
third quarter, 37-28. The Lady
Lancers’ Jessica Lester drilled a
couple of three pointers in the
CFCA rally.
The fourth quarter really got
scarry when Casey Collins nit
one of two from the foul line with
6:06 left, cutting the Westfield
lead to 37-34.
Seventeen seconds later,
Collins was back at the foul line,
this time making both shots to
pull to within a point of the Lady
Hornets. Brandi Bazemore
scored a basket to regain a three
point lead, but back to back bas
kets by Jenny Foster gave the
Lady Lancers their first lead, 40-
CFCA Lancers beat Hornets 65-49
By PHIL CLARK

Seventeen days earlier, when the Westfield Hornets and Central
Fellowship Christian Academy Lancers locked up at CFCA, the game
went into two overtimes before a Ben Luther basket at the buzzer
downed Westfield 70-69.
The Lancers didn’t want that to happen again as they bolted to a 24-
12 first quarter advantage and went on to beat the Hornets Jan. 22 at
the Hornets’ Nest 65-49.

After a Beth Anne Murph free

with a free throw.
After a CFCA foul following
turnover, Todd iced the game
with two more free throws giving
the Lady Hornets a 47-44 win.
Westfield will be looking to
