'NO BIG DEAL' - That's what Andrea Hutchens, a friend of the
Graham family, had to say about the procedure used in the
bone marrow drive. Red Cross staffer Pamela Harris is shown
here drawing the blood sample used for the National Bone
Marrow Registry. A second drive will be held Feb. 6 at the
Pavilion in Warner Robins.
Donor
The first step means signing
up, having your blood typed and
registered in the National
Marrow Donor Program. This
involves have a small amount of
blood drawn (less than for an
ordinary blood drive).
Most volunteer donors never
receive a call. However, if records
identify you at some point as a
matched donor, you may be the
only person who can help save the
life of that patient.
Doctors perform the proce
dure of extracting bone marrow
under anesthesia. The process is
Eainless. However, donors are
kely to have some lower back
pain or discomfort for a few days
following the donation.
Donors have found that a
small price to pay for helping
someone keep on living, and have
described the experience as “won
derful." They say they would have
no hesitation about doing it
again.
A bone marrow drive in Fort
Valley a few years ago resulted in
a match between a local donor
and a child in Belgium. The late
Susan Jones Lee, a leukemia vic
tim, lived for six years following a

marrow donation from a woman
in Seattle who responded to a
drive.
To participate donors must be
between the ages of 18 and 60
and in good general health with
no history of cancer, diabetes,
heart disease or heart attack. A
volunteer marrow donor may not
be greatly overweight or at high
risk for contracting AIDS or the
HIV virus.
The National Donor Program
needs a diverse registry because
they more likely find matched
donors in the patient’s own ethnic
or racial group. The National
Donor Program especially needs
African-American donors.
