Obituaries
Richard P. Mahoney, Sr.
Richard “Dick" P. Mahoney Sr.,
83, of Perry, died Feb. 6 at his res
idence.
Private services have been held.
Mr. Mahoney was a retired
business owner and a Catholic.
He is survived by his wife,
Matilda Mahoney; sons, Richard
Mahoney Jr. of Bonaire; John
Mahoney and Dan Mahoney,
both of Orlando, Fla.; Tom
Mahoney of Boyton Beach, Fla.,
daughters, Kathy Svoboda of
Perry and Mary Ann Paschall of
Dallas, Texas; a brother, John
Mahoney of Fort Myers, Fla., and
a sister, Jean Morgan of Port
Richey, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be made to the Hospice of
Houston Cou' *y or the American
Cancer Society

Teresa Nast, fci, of 1736
Houston Lake Road, Perry, died
Feb. 15 at her home.
A funeral mass was held at the
Church of the Annunciation on
Feb. 16. Burial will take place Feb.
19 in the Holy Sepulchre
Cemetery in Rochester, N!Y.
Born in Rochester, Mrs. Nast
had lived in Perry for two years
She was a homemaker and the
widow of James Nast.
She is survived by her daughter

A special Sunday afternoon
program on “Being Radical for
Christ” will be held Feb. 21 at
Faith Bible Fellowship Church,
517 Dr. Martin Luther King
Drive, Perry.
The program begins at 3:30
p.m. Guest speakers will be Larry
Holmes of the National
Association for the Advancement
of Colored People, and the Rev.
John Simpson. -Gospel singing
will be offered by the Frambro
Chapel Male Choir. Dinner will
be served.

Gary Wayne Pierce was sen
tenced to 6 years in prison and 14
years probation, sex offender pro
bation, psychiatric counseling, no
Internet access at his home, and
11,000 fine and fees.
District Attorney Kelly Burke
commented that “This case is a
first for Houston County. While
the Internet can bring a world of
information into our homes, not
all of it is welcome. Predators like
Gary Pierce must be contained,
and Judge Nunn’s sentence cer
tainly filled the bill. I hope that
all parents will take this case as a
Sandifer sentenced
on assault charges

Bennie Lee Sandifer Jr., a 27
year old Warner Robins man, was
sentenced to 8 years in prison and
IS years probation Feb. 12 at the
Houston County Courthouse in
Perry.
Sandifer was charged with
three counts of aggravated
assault, one count of simple bat
tery, and three counts of posses
sion of a firearm during the com
mission of a crime from an inci
dent stemming from an incident
at a Houston County apartment
on Sept. 22,1998.
At the sentencing Sandifer
apologized to Judge George F.
Nunn Jr. and said that he would
not do this again.
Nunn labeled Sandifer as “a
bully with a gun,” in his interpre
tation of the pattern of Sandifer’s
lengthy history of violent and
unnecessary criminal activities,
including: a shooting from 1990
with no injuries, tossing over two
pay phones in 1990, a pistol
pointing incident in Marshallville
in 1991, and several other offens
es.

Thelma Elkins Roberts
Thelma Elkins Roberts of
3631 Hillcrest Ave., Macon, died
Feb. 15, 1999 in a local nursing
home. Graveside services were
held at 2:30 p.m., Feb. 16 at
Macon Memorial Park Cemetery
with the Rev. Joe McDaniel offi
ciating.
Mrs. Roberts, a Macon native,
was a member of Mabel White
Baptist Church, a beautician and
a homemaker. She was the widow
of Luther L. Roberts.
She is survived by her daugh
ters, Gloria Ragland of Perry, and
Sue Walker of Macon, her sisters,
Arlene Bush and Mary Christian,
both of Macon, and her brother,
Marvin Elkins of Conyers; six
grandchildren and 13 great
grandchildren.

Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements.

perform at First Baptist
“Jeremiah People”, a drama
and music group, will perform
live at the First Baptist Church of
Perry at 7 p.m. , Feb. 20.
According to First Baptist
Minister of Music, Ron Moore,
“Jeremiah People has a desire to
provide Biblical solutions to con
temporary problems facing the
Christian, the family and the
church.”

At the sentencing heating, the
Court stressed the volatility of
the situation and that on many
occasions like this the young girl
ends up dead. The Court further
stressed that Pierce must be sub
ject to monitoring to keep him
away from children, when he gets
out of prison.

This wooden stove fireplace caught fire early Toes,
morning. The homeowners were home at the time of the
fire and were able to extinguish the fire before much
damage could bd done. According to Perry City Fire Chief
Gary Hamlin damage was done to the ceiling and the roof
of tne home located at 406 Riley St in Perry. The fire
started from an improperly installed vent on the stove
fireplace.
AARP offers safe driving course

mature driving class for those 50
and older. Sponsored by the Perry
Hospital, it is to be held at the
hospital dining room Feb. 25 and
26 from 1 to 5 pm each day. The
second class will be from 6 to 10
