Genesis House celebrates 9 years
By STACIE M.VU
Nine years of helping the
homeless of the Perry area were
celebrated during a hind-raising
banquet March 6 at the Perry
Community Center.
The Genesis House, a home
less shelter for men, was the ben
eficiary of the fund-raising effort.
Genesis House is operated as a
ministry of Greater Word of
Deliverance Church of Perry.
While these men are at the
Genesis House they are required
to stay away from alcohol and
drugs, attempt to find a job and
attend Bible study.
Some 300 to 400 men have
stayed at the Genesis House and
more than two-thirds of those
men now have better lives off of
the streets," according to Milton
Wynn, pastor of Greater Word of
Deliverance Church.
“We in the church began the
Genesis House several years ago
after recognizing the need for a
place for homeless men who want
to turn their lives around,” said
Wynn. “I believe there is home
lessness because God is not a part
of their lives.”
In the beginning of the pro
gram, hotel rooms were rented for
the men to stay in until they
could get back on their feet. In
1989, Lelia Smith allowed the
Genesis House group the use of a
two-bedroom house at 913 Cathy
Circle in Perry.
The Genesis House has
recently opened its arms to
women and children. Wynn
spoke of hopes of purchasing a
local farm and having a foil time
staff. This will allow all services to
be consolidated into one location.
As of now, everyone working
with the Genesis House is on a
volunteer basis.
A man who lived at the
Genesis House and who now
owns his own electronics repair
business said “God has a way of
putting you with people who
care.”
The Genesis House gave him
food, clothing, shelter and the
Spirit of Goff “It has been hard
for me because I did not believe
in the laws of society. I thank
God for the Genesis House.”
Vernon Lane, also a former
resident of the Genesis House,
now owns his own landscaping
business, Lane’s Landscaping.
Several success stories have
come from the Genesis House,
along with several relationships.
Wynn said several men have
Kid the Greater Word of
verance Church after coming
to the Genesis House.
During the Banquet, the Rev.
Josh Kirvin of First Baptist
Church in Warner Robins, was
guest speaker. He pointed out
that churches are suffering from
an identity crisis.
Wynn said he hoped support
for the Genesis House continues.
“Not all churches are called to do
this. We understand that. We just
ask for you to help us.”
According to Rep. Larry
Walker, D-Perry, there was good
news from Atlanta. The House
budget, passed March 8, included
$25,000 for Genesis House. This
amount still has to be approved
by the Senate.
Entertainment at the banquet
was provided by “Decision a
gospel group from Perry. They
have recently released a CD
named Decision. The CD can be
purchased at Greater Word of
Deliverance Church on U. S. 41
just North of Perry.
