Houston County Commission
Chairman Joe Sherrill Stafford
provided members of the Perry
iCiwanis Club with an update on
the status of the county during a
March 16 program.
Stafford reported the county
rates 12th in population in the
state with slightly more than
103,000 persons. He said the
county is growing rapidly, with
more than 7,000 new single-fam
ily dwellings constructed since
1990.
Construction will continue in
the immediate future. The coun
ty will build a new courthouse
and jail a process Stafford
anticipates will take about three
years.
He said it will be another year
before dirt is shoveled at the
Perry Parkway location of the
new courthouse and jail.
Stafford said the final inter
views for the construction man
agement were to be held March
23.
Present plans call for the cour
thouse ana jail to be connected
on the 63-acre site by a 300-foot
long underground tunnel with
lighting only. There wall be no
front door facing the parkway, but
what Stafford described as a
“pretty and appealing plaza
entrance” at the rear.
The building, expected to have
two stories, will have four upstairs
courtrooms.
Other county properties are
also growing. Stafford said the
Perry Houston County Airport
had 15 aircraft housed vear
round during 1995.
Because of improvements and
expansion projects, the airport is
now host to 54 aircraft, Stafford
said.
He said the new Georgia State
Patrol station is in the planning
stages. The structure will replace
the current GSP office located
just offl-75.
The design is now complete,
but a contractor has not been
selected, Stafford said. The land
transfer for the property, located
along Larry Walker Parkway
across from the Georgia National
Fairgrounds and Agricenter,
should be completed soon.
Stafford said one possible
change from the pending con
struction is that the DOT might
move existing offices from the
Kings Chapel site to the former
