Obituaries
Billy Leonard Barrett Sr.
Billy Leonard Barrett Sr., 65,
of 904 Evergreen Street, Perry,
died March 31,1999, at his home.
Graveside services were held
April 2 in the Woodlawn
Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr.
David L. Carter officiating.
Mr. Barrett was a native of
Pulaski County, and had lived in
Perry for most of his life. He was
Personnel and Safety Supervisor
for Southdown (formerly
Medusa) Cement Co. for 46
years, and was a Protestant.
He is survived by his wife, Lilli
Ann Thompson Barrett of Peny;
a daughter, April B. Petros of
Alpharetta; a son, Leonard
Barrett Jr. of Perry; two sisters,
Hellen Pennington of Blairsville
and Jane Wood of Perry; a broth
er, Kenneth Barrett, a grandson,
Billy Leonard Barrett 111, and a
granddaughter, Gayla Gibbs, all
of Perry.
Memorial donations may be
made to the American Heart
Association, P.O. Box 2065,
Macon, Georgia 31204.

Mrs. Harvey NeStnith Sr.
Mrs. Harvey M. NeSmith Sr.,
87, died on April 4, 1999, at her
home in Brevard, N.C. She was a
former resident of Elko and had
lived in Brevard for the last two
years.
Graveside services were held
on April 6 in the Elko Cemetery,
with the Rev. Harold Moore and
the Rev. Eddie Braswell officiat
ing.
A native of Elko, Mrs.
NeSmith attended Florida State
University where she was a mem
ber of Phi Mu sorority. She was a
member of the Elko UMC; the
Gen. Daniel Stewart Chapter of
the D.A.R., the United
Daughters of the Confederacy
and the Perry Pilot Club. She was
retired from the Houston County
Department of Health.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Harvey M. NeSmith
Sr., and is survived by her daugh
ter, Ann NeSmith Windham of
Brevard; . hejL. Harvey
NeSmith Jr. of Perry, a sister, Mrs.

Bentley Lavan Partain
Bentley Lavan Partain, 60, died
on April 1 at the Crawford Long
Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, April 4, at the Woodlawn
Cemetery, with the Rev. Tim
Millwood officiating.
Mr. Partain was bom in Upson
County and had lived in Perry
since 1958. He was retired from
the maintenance department of
Crown Cork fit. Seal in Houston
County. He attended Friendship
Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife,
Margaret Loving Partain of Perry;
his sons, Jeff Partain of Warner
Robins, Terry Partain and Carl
Partain, both of Perry; his sisters
and brothers, Mrs. Donnie Dukes
and Jennie Van Winkle, bbth of
Bremen; Evelyn Smith .Sylvia
Green and Charles Partain of
Thomaston; Ruth Smith of
Brooks, Norman Partain of
Barnesville, Agnes McChargue
and Betty Baughcum, both of
Griffin, and three grandchildren.

Viola Scott
Viola Scott, 63, died April 1,
1999. Services are to be held at 2
&m., April 7 at the Greater Union
aptist Church, with burial in the
Rest Haven Cemetery. Last
respects may be paid in the church
beginning at 1:30 p.m.
A native of Houston County,
Mrs. Scott was a retired civil ser
vice worker. She was a member of
Greater Union Baptist Church,
where she served on the usher
board. She was formerly president
of the local chapter of Georgia
Coalition of Black Women and
was named woman of the year by

Council on Youth Project for
Kids. She was a sponsor of many
beauty pageants.
Survivors include her children,
Robert Scott of Elko, Ernest
Scott, Danny Solomon, Denneth
Solomon and Mary Scott, all of
Perry, Lindsey Solomon of
Delaware; brothers and sisters,
John Lane and Arbie Lane, both
of Perry; Willie Scott, Beulah
Reed, Brenda Galbreaith, Debra
Chestnut and Michael Tate, all of
Knoxville, Tenn., Mabel Bryant,
Doris Lane, Catherine Lawson
and Ruth Lane, all of Perry;
grandmother, Viola Billings of
Perry; 17 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.

Ann Gordy Smith
Ann Gordy Smith, 77, of 632
Lawson Drive, Perry, died April 1,
1999, at her home.
Funeral services were heid on
April 3 at the Perry United
Methodist Church, with the Rev.
Dr. Billy Key, the Rev. Dr. Marcus
Tripp and the Rev. Ken Myers
officiating. Burial was in the
Evergreen Cemetery.
A lifelong resident of Perry,
Mrs. Smith attended Georgia
State College for Women. She
was retired from the Houston
County Tax Commissioner’s
Office. She was a member of the
Sorrelle Club and the Perry
Hospital Pink Ladies. She was a
member of Perry United
Methodist Church and the
Howell Cobb Sunday School
Class.
The family suggests contribu
tions to the Perry United
Methodist Church or the Perry
Public Library.
Survivors include her husband,
H. Eugene Smith, her daughter,
Judith Golden, her son Stephen
Smith, all of Perry; three grand
children and one great-grand
child.

A native of
Perry, Mr.
Tolleson
attended South
Georgia Junior
College and
the University
of Georgia. He
served in the
United States
Army in Korea.
He was instrumental in having
the state headquarters of the
Junior Chamber of Commerce
located in Perry. He was a past
president of the Perry Club
Council, served on the adminis
trative board of the Perry United
Methodist Church, and was a
founding member of Houston
Lake Development, Inc.
He was a charter member of
the Perry Rotary Club, a former
Director of the Perry Chamber of
Commerce, a founding member
of the Westfield Schools Board of
Trustees, a past president of the
Quality Wood Preservers Society
and Director Emeritus of the
Georgia State Golf Association.
He served on the Advisory
Board of the Georgia Sports Hall
of Fame and was elected to the
Board of Governors of the
Southern Pine Inspection Bureau,
serving as chairman.
A second generation lumber
man, Mr. Tolleson was chairman
and owner of Mellco, Inc.
He is survived by his wife,
Sandra Smisson Tolleson, son and
daughter-in-law, Mell S. Tolleson
Jr., and Marti Tolleson, all of
Perry; his daughter, Keith
Tolleson Bayless of Macon, four
grandchildren, Sam and Josie
Bayless and Trae and Sallianna
Tolleson; a brother, T.R. Tolleson,
Sr. of Perry, and a sister, Barbara
T. Baker of St. Simons.
At the family’s request, memo
rial donations may be made to the
Methodist Youth Home in
Macon, the Westfield Schools in
Perry, and Hospice of Houston
County.
