Walker reflects on
1999 General
Assembly session
By CHARLOTTE PERKINS
Times-lournal Staff
Rep. Larry Walker, D-Perry,
who recently returned to Perry
from the 1999 session of the
Georgia General Assembly,
received a warm welcome home
from the Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce,
Speaking to the Chamber at
their breakfast meeting on March
31, Walker said that information
from the final days of the legisla
tive session was “still sifting
down.”
“It gets hectic the last two or
three days,” Walker said, “but it
was a good session, starting slow
ly and ending with a lot of activ
ity” .
While characterizing the ses
sion as productive, Walker com
mented that there was “more
rancor and bitter bipartisanship
in the Senate than in the House.
“The House looked better
than the Senate in 1999,” he said.
Walker told Chamber mem
bers that in addition to funds
announced earlier for the
Georgia National Fairgrounds
and Agricentcr and the Museum
of Aviation, the new budget
includes funding of $45,000 for
Perry-Houston County Airport.
He also pointed out that
Commissioner Wayne
Shackelford of the Georgia
Department of Transportation
has agreed that Houston Lake
Road will be curbed and guttered
all the way from Warner Robins
to Perry.
Commenting on issues cov
ered during the session, he
emphasized health care.
He said that with new health
insurance legislation, patients
will be able to select their own
doctors, though perhaps at a
higher cost. Also, Georgians will
be able to take action against
HMOs in cases where they feel
they have been denied necessary
health care.
An insurance advocate for cit
izens will be appointed, Walker
said.
“Noting that health insurance
companies hajJjMpyided coverage
for Viagra foTTrfen, but riot for
birth control pills for women,
Walker said that women would
now be entitled to receive pre
scription birth control pills under
their insurance coverage.
Walker told the Chamber that
the provision for coverage of
birth control pills received pre
dominately Democratic backing,
and said, “Republican men are
not as sensitive to women’s issues
as they ought to be.”
