good, to full of energy, and so much
fun that I think everyone involved (in
cluding the band) was just knocked
out by the immensity of it all. There
were no pretensions and no egos in
volved. It was simply a set of great
songs by great players in front of an
audience who wouldn't have missed
it for the world. There's still no word
as to whether Guadalcanal will con
tinue on as a ‘real’ band, so treat this
like your last chance to ever seen
them, because it just might be. Daisy
opens.
Hazel Virtue (Atomic Music Hall)
Full-on hook-laden alternative rock.
Eric Britt knows his way around the
pop song structure, and it sounds
like it's the clashing of his ideas with
his band's need to just plain old rock
that makes Hazel Virtue what it is.
Their song "My Spanish
Puppetfinger’ closes the Five Ring
Circus CD.
Alex Marquez (Garden Stage) His
great new CD is called Unaccept
able. and it's anything but. He’s a
hard-as-nails songwriter in the tradi
tion of Westerberg, Jonathan
Richman and Springsteen, and he
brings the rock. Playing from 9:30-
10:30 p.m.
The Mavericks (Classic Center)
Part alternative country, part Elvis
and Roy Orbison, and oh, just see the
article on Page 19 and leave me
alone. Junior Brown opens. 9 p.m.
John MeCutcheon (Athens-Clarke
County Library) McCutcheon is on
Rounder Records (the same label
smart enough to sign Jonathan
Richman). and in addition to his
regular albums, has written a four-
album series of children's songs, in
cluding Summersongs, Winter songs.
and you can probably guess the rest.
Grab the kids and head to the library.

John Barry (Classic Center) Per

Me in th6 Car," "Your Love Amazes
Me* and "The President’s Neck is
Missing’ Oust kidding about that last
one). A percentage of the profits from

Diamondback (Night Owl Lounge)
Hard rock. Playing with Captain Virgil
(Jackyl guys).
Drivin’N’Cryin’ (Classic Center)
They're wrapped in that courageous
flyin' sky. It’s a cryin’ shame that
Geffen didn't do much with Wrapped
in Sky. because it's a better record
than DNC has made in years. Oh.
well, they're still the kings of crunchy
Southern metal (with a chewy folk
center), end '.heir live shows Drove it
every time they play. 9 p.m.
Fuzzy Sprouts (Atomic Music Ha'!)
For some reason, as I looked at my
compute! screen light now and saw
‘Fuzzy Sprouts" written there, that
song "Eeep Opp Ork Ah Ha" or what
ever it is popped into my head. I’m
not aware that the Sprouts play this
song, but they certainly could, and
now that I think about it, they prob
ably should. Look for their debut CD
in it>e loil Twc sets starting at 11
p.m., as they say sharp.
Hot Burritos (Morton Theatre) To
night the Burritos will be stripping it
all down and emphasizing their own
special "old-timey. rocking on the
porch" country, traditional and folk
songs. This is the Hot Burritos at their
purest.
Josh Joplin Band (DT's Down
Under) High-energy song-driven
rock. They're a three piece that has
been compared to artists as distinct
as Bob Mould, R E M. 3nd Henry
Rollins, and have a new record called
Projector Head.
Max Fine (Georgia Bar) Jazz at 6
p.m.
Mudcat w/Neel Pattman (High
Hat) Blues. Mr. Pattman truly deliv
ers the goods.
Kathleen . arrish (Morton The
atre) Parrish has been playing lately
with guitarist/mandolinist Jason
Slatton, who is pretty much Gram
Parsons to her Emmylou Hams. To
gether they play some beautiful
acoustic folk/country in the Iris
DeMent vein, and tonight they're
opening a show that includes the Hot
Burritos, and Brides of Jesus. She's
also featured on the Five Ring Circus
CD. and Slatton's band The Lures
has a song on the Release the Mon
keys. CD.
Savan Foot Politic (40 Watt) They
have a swell new self-titled CD out
on the new Desafinado label in At
lanta, and it more fully defines them
as a swing band (although there are
certainly still some elements of ska
and jazz involved). The disc should
be in stores now, or for sale at this
show. Give it a spin. The Blacktop
Rockets open.
The Stapletons (Lowery's) Rock
covers and originals.
Stlnkfeet (Allen's) Harsh Southern
rock with a country edge. Playing
some classic covers and originals.
Swig (High Hat) Formerly known as
J's Variety, and playing oid-timev
folk, Irish pub songs, country and
much more. They've added a lot of
female vocals, and are apparently as
good or better *han they've ever
been. Check 'em out. Playing happy
hour at 6 p.m.
Matt Wauchope (City Bar) The
Phat Phive member will be playing
solo jazz piano, including material by

Big Top (40 Watt) The all-rock, all
clown, all-the-time clown bandi's are
back for their second Athens show
(and probably second-to-last ever),
and this is not to be missed. The first
Big Top show was an event I'll not
soon forget, and this one promises
lo be a bigger better, and ah-around
huge spectacle. The show includes
a lot ol punk rock in ciown suits, a
fire-breather, a magician, ano various
sideshow antics (including The Rev.
Uncle Laffo driving a nail into his
