PERFORMANCE
ATHENS CHORAL SOCIETY Enjoy an evening of
tuneful hilarity presented by the Athens Choral
Society. "P.D.Q. Bach" is the honored composer of
the evening. "Birthday Ode to Big Daddy Bach" is a
rousing salute to J. S. Bach on his 100th birthday.
"The Stoned Guest" is a half-act comic opera based
on the famed Don Giovanni. The finale is a piesenta-
tion of "Oedipus Tex," which puts a decidedly
Western spin on the famous Greek tragedy. This con
cert will help raise funds for the Society's free con

sale for the last of the ACT Summer Musicals, "Those
Crazy, Wacky Songs for the Kid in All of Us!" The

FREE TO BE YOU AND ME The Oconee Cultural Arts
Foundation present its seventh annual children's pro
duction, Free to be... You and Me by actress Mario
Thomas and directed by local musician Pam
Blanchard with live music performed by the "Sunny-
Side Up" band. Originally published in 1974, this
spectacular collection of stories, songs and poems,
all about the joys of just being yourself (and letting
others do the same), is packed with enough inspira
tion to span several generations. Oconee County Civic
Center, Thursday August 10 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.,
Friday August 11 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturday
August 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets: $6 adults, $ 4 for chil

BICYCLE TOUR The PUSH America Bicycle Team makes
»*s way through Athens as part of its 7,000 mile trek
across America. During this "Journey of Hope," 70
undergraduate members of the Pi Kappa Phi
Fraternity cycle along two different r outes between
San Francisco and Washington, D.C. to raise money
and promote a greater understanding of people with

LITERARY EVENTS
EATONTON LITERARY FESTIVAL The second annual
Eatonton Literary Festival and Book Fair celebrates
the lives of such famous Putnam County authors as
Joel Chandler Harris, Flannery O'Connor and Alice
Walker. The festival opens with an evening of read
ings of works by these authors at the Eatonton
Presbyterian Church. Saturday's events begin with an
all-day book fair, African folk tales by Akbar Imhotep,
guided tours of literary sites, lectures on the three
featured authors, an Eatonton-Putnam County
Historical Society luncheon (registration required,
$10 fee) and a closing reception with live music.

FANTASY DISCUSSION The meeting of the Young

Young adults ages 11-18 can register for 'Jump Into
Reading!" Prizes will by awarded for reading points
