THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER
Benjamin Franklin once quipped that 'Fish and visitors smell after three days'. The Town &
Gown Player's final Mainstage performance of this season, The Man Who Came To Dinner, proves
that no fish can smell that bad.
The plot of the play revolves around the character of Sheridan Whiteside, an infamous critic,
radio personality and friend of the stars. When he stumbles on the front steps of the Stanley resi
dence and is injured, he is confined to their home until his leg heals. The envious Stanleys
quickly realize that they are the target of his sharp and stinging wit, and are soon overcome by
Whiteside's complete control of their household, as comedic chaos envelops the whole family.
The Man Who Came To Dinner, penned by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman in 1939, was
written in tribute to their friends from the posh Algonquin Round Table, an elite collection of the
best the entertainment industry had to offer in the 1920's and 30's. There are fictional counter
parts of Alexander Woolcott (Whiteside), Noel Coward, Gertrude Lawrence and Harpo Marx (AKA
Banjo) which appear throughout the play, sprinkling their unique brand of comic hijinx along the
way.
"It's a really funny and well-written play. It is one of the most comedic plays I've ever read,"
says Eric Wagoner, director and Town & Gown veteran. "I hope the audience will find it incredibly
funny even though it's from 1939. Hopefully they won't hnd it dated. The situation is as funny
now as it was then."
The Man Who Came To Dinner continues this weekend at the Athens Community Theatre.
