Modern Skirts, Bain
Mattox & Shot From
Guns, Cary Ann Hearst
Melting Point
After charting the exponen
tial growth from DTs to Tasty
World to a frequently sold-out
40 Watt over the past few years,
the members of Modem Skirts
are taking their refined pop-
rock to the Melting Point for a
two-night stand to try some
thing new. "We decided to do
something special with the two
shows there because that's a
different venue, a different kind
of feel than what we've been
used to doing for the past two
years or so," says Jojo Glidewell,
one of the Skirts' songwriters
and multi-instrumentalists.
The band and openers Bain
Mattox & Shot From Guns and
Cary Ann Hearst will play to
gether in Atlanta on Friday, Jojo Slidowell
July 27 and then shift the show
back home on Saturday, performing a regular set. Sunday, however, all the groups involved
are taking a stripped-down, acoustic and "unplugged" approach. The Skirts in particular will
play around with their sound, welcoming former Audition With Max Reinhardt players Amy
Bramblett (accordion and clarinet), Jenny Culler (viola) and Colin Jones (trumpet) for several
numbers and debuting at least one new song.
"I collected some musicians, an orchestra-type thing with different arrangements, for some
of the stuff we won't even touch on Saturday," says Glidewell, who handled all the new or
chestral arrangements for these songs. "[Rehearsals] went really well, it pretty much fell into
place nice and easy. We're using arrangements not on the records, and the feel will be com
pletely different. It came from loving the way Tom Waits has some rickety orchestrations with
his music, and that was kind of the inspiration. I doubt it'll have a Waits kind of feel, that's
not really what I was going for, but I'm excited about it."
In other news, the band has plans to continue kicking around the Southeast on extended
weekend tours, simultaneously recording in a number of studios before deciding this fall how
to approach a follow-up album to 2005's Catalogue of Generous Men. Saturday's show starts at
9 p.m., Sunday's is at 8 p.m. [Chris Hassiotis]
