Savannah State
University Professor and
A.E. Beach High School
alumna Dr. Dionne Hoskins,
the District 2 Representative
of the Savannah-Chatham
County Board of Public
Education, launched her
campaign Wednesday to
seek a four-year-term on the
school board.
"I am running
because the children of
District 2 need someone to
ask questions for them,
questions that will bring
about conversations that will
make sure their needs stay
on the table. We are at a dif
ficult place in education in
Savannah . We need people
who are committed, coura
geous and compassionate to
step forward. I am that can
didate for the second dis
trict," Dr. Hoskins said. The
election will be held July 31,
2012.
A Savannah State
University graduate, Dr.
Hoskins earned a Doctorate
of Philosophy in Marine
Sciences from the
University of South
Carolina. She successfully
developed the Cooperative
Marine Education and
Research Program at
Savannah State for the
National Oceanic and
Atmospheric
Administration. She teaches
graduate and undergraduate
courses at SSU and has an
active research laboratory.
Among Hoskins
values are transparency and
availability. She wants the
public to better understand
how the district makes deci
sions and wants to focus on
improving students perform
ance.
“We can not ignore low
test scores across the district.
We have to focus on how we
can have students better pre
pared and how we have
failed them,” Hoskins said.

SCLC Searches for New President,
Vivian Named Interim President
At a press conference
held at SCLC National
Headquarters, Chairman of
the Board Rev. Dr. Bernard
LaFayette, Jr. made the
announcement, “President
Farris is no longer our
President.”
By the SCLC
Constitution, the Vice
President of the organiza
tion, Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian,
automatically becomes
Interim President. Chairman
LaFayette, Jr. indicated that
a search committee process
could start as early as next
week, in beginning the
search for SCLC’s next
President.
The Chairman indicat
ed that Isaac Newton Farris,
Jr, nephew to Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., would be
transitioning in an orderly
Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian
fashion, and that it was
hoped that the Search
Committee would have pres
idential nominees ready by
the SCLC annual conven
tion, which will take place in
July.
“Mr. Farris has other respon
sibilities right now that he
will be focusing on,” relayed
Chairman LaFayette, Jr. “I
want to honor the contribu
tion he has made to the
SCLC. He gave the best
leadership that he could give
and he gave all that he could
give. After SCLC lost Dr.
Creecy, Mr. Farris main
tained this organization. He
has made a tremendous con
tribution to SCLC and we
respect him for that. And it’s
not over yet. At some later
time, Mr. Farris may take on
another role with SCLC.
This is not the end, nor is
this a separation. He shares
our vision and our mission.”
Chairman LaFayette said,
“We are moving forward
with young leadership. We
are laying a good foundation
for them and we are in good
shape.”
