sad day for the civil rights
movement. One of our pi
oneers, Julian Bond, has
died” Julian Bond was a
man of great insight and el
oquent wisdom.He was one
of the architects of the Black
Lives Matter movement be
fore there was a hashtag.
As a young man
Julian played a major role
in sit-ins and freedom rides
and the 1963 March on
Washington.
He was also a
great friend to this organiza
tion, its founders and to me
personally.
His presence is no
longer with us but his voice
will remain echoed through
the work we and others do
in civil rights movement.”
Bond campaigned
for equal rights for mi
norities beyond the United
States.
In 1985, police ar
rested him outside the South
African Embassy in Wash
ington, where he was pro
testing against apartheid, the
legalized racial segregation
enforced by South Africa at
the time.
Bond was elect
ed to the Georgia House of
Representatives in 1965,
but his white colleagues in
the House refused to let him
take his seat because of his
opposition to the Vietnam
War. A year later, the Su
preme Court accused the
Legislature of violating his
freedom of speech and or
dered it to seat him.

Georgia House, he served in
the state Senate for years.

mourns the passing of
chairman Julian Bond, civil
rights titan and our brother,”
the civil rights group said in
a tweet. “May he rest in eter
nal peace.”
Bond is survived
by his wife, Pamela Horow
itz, and five children.
