Prematurity Awareness Month
Recognizes Neonatal Medical Team
Tara Hart will nev
er forget the most valuable
piece of advice she got when
her premature twin boys
were fighting for their lives
in the Level III neonatal in
tensive care nursery (NICN)
at the Dwaine & Cynthia
Willett Children’s Hospital
of Savannah at Memorial
Health.
“Dr. [Bradley]
Buckler told me, ‘Your ba
bies are sitting on the edge
of a cliff,”’ she recalls.
‘“There will be days when
they plummet off the cliff
and we will pull them back
up. Just remember, though,
that when we pull them back
up, they are still on the edge
of the cliff.’”
Buckler, a MED-
NAX-affiliated neonatolo-
gist and director of Memo
rial’s NICN, sees the same
scenario play out every day.
Memorial’s NICN’s status
as Level III unit means that
Buckler and his team care
for the most critically ill
newborns in the region.
Hart’s babies, Layne and
Camden, went home two
months after they were
bom. Today, they are active
2-year-olds who show no
developmental delays.
“They are so smart, so fun
ny, and so fun,” she says.
November is Prematurity
Awareness Month, and Hart
and other parents whose
babies spent time in Memo
rial’s NICN recognize the
difference the physicians,
nurses, and other caregivers
made in their lives.
“They’re not only
saving babies’ lives, they’re
there to comfort parents,”
Hart says. “It takes a spe
cial person to work in the
NICN.”
While not all pre
mature infants experience
complications, those bom
early are at greater risk of
developing significant med
ical problems. The most
common respiratory com
plication is Respiratory Dis
tress Syndrome, or RDS,
which the Hart babies suf
fered.
RDS is caused by
a deficiency of surfactant
in the lungs. Surfactant re
duces surface tension in
the lungs of infants. With
out enough surfactant, the
baby experiences serious
difficulty breathing. Unless
it is treated properly, RDS
can result in acute compli
cations, long-term conse
quences, and even death.
In Memorial’s
Level III NICN, the staff
uses advanced techniques
and medications to treat
RDS and other conditions
caused by premature birth.
Surfactant replacement ther
apy has helped decrease the
mortality rate for premature
infants in the U.S. by near
ly 25 percent since the early
1990s.

Water Vitamins And Minerals
Water, Vitamins
and Minerals goes hand-n-
hand. Often times we do not
really value the importance
of simple water, until we are
extremely thirsty on a hot
summer day.
But water is vital
to the human body, the av
erage composition of the
adult human body is 65%
water. It is required for just
the simplest of basic human
functions. Pure clean ph bal
anced water is a must in our
everyday diet.
Basic Essential Vi
tamins and Minerals are: Vi
tamin A, Vitamin B,Vitamin
C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D,
Vitamin K, Folic Acid, Iron,
Calcium, Zinc and Chromi
um.
These elements are
among many that provide
nutrients for the body on a
daily basis. Eating a wide
variety of foods, especially
those with an abundance of
color for the antioxidants,
helps to insure that the body
is getting all of the nutrients
in which it needs.
An adequate
amount of fresh breathable
air daily and exercise add
ed to our weekly schedule,
along with a healthy diet
of clean water, vitamins
and minerals, maximizes
the body’s ability to fight
diseases and remain in the
healthiest state as possible.
So help your body to help
itself.

Register with FEMA Even If You
Registered With Other Agencies
Reporting person
al damage to a county emer
gency management agency
or getting help from the
American Red Cross is not
the same as registering for
federal disaster assistance
with FEMA.
Georgia residents
affected by Hurricane Mat
thew may have reported
damage to their local, state
or volunteer agencies. They
may have even registered
for assistance with those
other agencies.
Survivors can only
be considered for federal
help if they register with
FEMA for each stonn that
results in a major disaster
declaration. While FEMA,
the Georgia Emergency
Management and Homeland
Security Agency and volun
teer agencies work together,
their missions, programs and
funding are not the same.
Federal assistance
is available to eligible indi
viduals and households in
Bryan, Bulloch, Chatham,
Effingham, Evans, Glynn,
Liberty, Long, McIntosh and
Wayne counties. Damage or
losses from Hurricane Mat
thew in Georgia must have
occurred Oct. 4-15.
Applying for di
saster assistance is a two-
step process that ensures
consideration for all FEMA
programs and the U.S. Small
Business Administration di
saster loans. First, register
with FEMA, then complete
and return the SBA loan ap
plication, if one is offered.
There is no charge to apply
for the loan and if approved,
no obligation to accept it.
Disaster survivors
may register the following
ways:
• Online at Disas-
terAssistance.gov (also in
Spanish).
• Download the
FEMA mobile app (also in
Spanish).
• Call the FEMA
Helpline at 800-621-3362
(FEMA). Persons who are
