Two Major Headliners to Perform at 30th Savannah
Black Heritage Festival

be the featured headliner on
Grand Festival Day for the
30th Anniversary Celebra
tion of the Savannah Black
Heritage Festival. Grand
Festival Day will be held
at the Savannah Civic Cen
ter, February 9, 2019, and
the Band is scheduled to
perform at 8:00 p.m. Fam
ily-friendly activities, the
youth talent extravaganza
and the vendors’ merchan
dise and food market will
be offered. Adults 18 yrs.
and older are asked to sup
port the Savannah Black
Heritage Festival on Grand
Festival Day with a nomi
nal admission fee of S 5.00.
This helps to sustain the fes
tival and its efforts to offer
all other programs during
the 3-week period, free and
open to the public.
Sons of Mystro
are brothers and classical
violinists who learned to
play violin through the pub
lic schools of South Flor
ida. They use their violins
to interpret reggae classics,
American pop songs and
their own creations ac
companied by beats, and
sometimes a DJ & guitarist.
They will perform at 7:30
p.m., Friday, February 15th
in the Fine Arts Auditorium
at Georgia Southern - Arm
strong Campus, a co-spon-
sor for this performance.
Savannah State
University and the City of
Savannah present the 30th
Annual Savannah Black
Heritage Festival February 1

Savannah Native Leads Lassiter Band To
Rose Bowl

James E. Thomp
son, Jr. is the director of
bands at Lassiter High
School in Marietta, Georgia.
Mr. Thompson is a native
of Savannah, Georgia and
a 1993 honor graduate of
Herschel V. Jenkins High
School where he perfonned
under the direction of Mr.
Gary Lackey. As a high
school student, Mr. Thomp
son was considered one of
the finest trombone players
in the country. He was a re
cipient of numerous awards
and honors as a musician,
which includes: member
ship in the Georgia All-State
Band, Georgia All-State Or
chestra and the Governor’s
Honors Program.
In the summer
of 1992, he attended the
world-famous Interlochen
Arts Academy and was a
member of the World Youth
Symphony Orchestra. He
is a 1999 graduate of Flor
ida State University and has
done further study in music
at the University of Georgia.
He is the son of retired band
director James E. Thomp
son, Sr. and Thomasina Jen
kins Thompson.
An exciting and
unique opportunity has
James E. Thompson, Jr.
been presented to the 2018-
2019 Lassiter High School
Marching “Trojan” Band.
Through the course of a rig
orous application process,
the Marching “Trojan” Band
has been invited to perform
in the 130th Tournament of
Roses Parade on New Year’s
Day in Pasadena, Califor
nia. An application was
submitted in the Spring of
2017 in hopes of an invita
tion, and an acceptance was
granted on September 1 st to
the Lassiter Marching Band
for participation.

Roy Minter will
be officially sworn in as the
police chief of the Savannah
Police Department during a
ceremony at the Fountain at
Forsyth Park at 1 p.m. Dec.
28. '
The new police
chief was selected in June
following a national recruit
ment search. The finalists
went through a series of in
terviews and meetings with
key executive city staff, two
citizens advisory panels and
a law enforcement panel.
Minter began working with
the Savannah Police Depart
ment on Aug. 27 and has
served as the department’s
Director of Police Services
until he could officially be
sworn in.
Minter has more
than 30 years of public safe
ty experience. He most re
cently held the position of
police chief at Peoria (Ar
izona) Police Department,
where he served since 2011.
From 2008-2011, Minter
was the chief of Denton
(Texas) Police Department.
Prior to his appointment in
Denton, Minter spent 15
years with the Aurora (Col
orado) Police Department,
where he held several po
sitions, including narcot
ics unit sergeant, training
section commander, and
the operation support sec
tion commander, where he
supervised the SWAT, K-9
Unit, Gang Intervention
Unit and Pattern Crimes
Unit. He began his law en
forcement career with the
Houston Police Department,
where he served for 10 years
as an officer in the Special
Operations Division.
He holds a Bache
lor’s Degree in business ad
ministration and a Master’s
Degree in organizational
management from the Uni
versity of Phoenix.
