Didn’t Know Them.

The belief so long current ia agricul¬
tural circles in South Carolina, that the
valuable grasses which are so assiduously
cultivated at the North will not thrive
under our Southern sun, seems, from an
incident reported in our Columbia cor¬
respondence, to be the assumption of
ignorance rather than the conclusion of
experience. A farmer in Abbeville coun¬
ty having discovered two unknown
grasses growing wild on his farm, sent a
specimen department of each kind to the agricultural de¬
for classification. The
partment evidently did not recognize
them, as the specimens were prompt¬
ly forwarded to Washington for further
examination. The national department is

relative of mine had been a great sufferer from salt-rheum for
upwards of forty years. The disease was moBt distressing in her
hands, causing the skin to crack open on the inside of the lingers
at the joints and between the fingers. She was obliged to protect
the raw places by means of adhesive plasters, salves, ointments and
bandages, and during the winter months had to have her hands
dressed daily. The pain was quite severe at times and her general
health was badly affected, paving the way for other diseases to
creep in. Catarrh and rheumatism caused a great deal of suffering
in addition to the salt-rheum. She had used faithfully, and with
the most commendable perseverance, all the remedies She prescribed
by her physicians, but without obtaining relief. afterwards
began treating herself by drinking teas made several from blood-purify¬ de
ing roots and herbs. Sho continued this for years but
rived no benefit. Finally, about ten years ago. I chanced to read
one of Dr. Pierce's small pamphlets setting forth the merits of his
