As a rule, the price of cotton advances
. after a presidential election. A rise of half
, a cent per pound is in order.
■Our people want the Macon & Alabama
railroad, and they will watch the actions
. of the next Legislature in reference to its
. action in disposing of the charter in dispute
between the SavaDnah, Dublin & Western
. and the Macon & Dublin Short Line.
A number of cotton bales wrapped in
pine straw bagging have been shipped to
Europe from Charleston. There will in
. future be no ^rouble about the kind of bag
ging to use, and the pine straw industry
■ is bound to become profitable.
Col. C. S. Hamilton has given notice of
Ibis intention to contest the seat of Captaiu
A^G. McArthur in the legislature. His
ground for contesting is that the election
was illegal because there is no record that
.auy precincts, - except three, were ever es¬
tablished in Montgomery county as election
-.preciucts.
Cordele, Dooly county, has outboomed
any place ever built up in the wire
.grass legion of Georgia. Two years ago
-.the site of the present town was an old
..field with uo houses in sight. Now there
are about fifteen stores, several small in¬
dustrial enterprises and a bank and a
.newspaper are soon to be added the other
enterprises.
Cleveland is beaten and tariff reform has
been given a black eye, but the republi¬
can party is on its last legs, and we may
feel assurod that our defeat is short-lived.
The millions that the government had
given to the republican factory owners
through a protective tariff have been turn
■ ed to account in electing a republican
president. The democrats have to fight
millions of money with reason and argu¬
ment, and the-sugar draws the best crowd
,- generally.
Fire consumed about $150,000 worth of
property in Macon last Monday night.
Four stores with full stocks of goods, on
’Third street, were destroyed. These stores
•were occupied, by Nusbamn, VanSiokle &
Tindall, T. C. Burke, II D. Adams & Go.,
.and Mr. Charles Taylor. The stcre of
Hendrix, Willingham A Co., and several
others barely ■ escaped destruction, The
loss was covered by insurance to the ex
nt of about $80,000.
Stock-raising in Georgia is decidedly on
the increase, and recent colt shows an va¬
rious sections of.the state have proven cot.
.clusively that as good horses can be raised
in Georgia as the famous blue grass region
of Kentucky can produce.
The Interior Department at Washington
lias jnst decided that a; pllcauts for patent
tan not legally "part their name in the
middle.” The caso in point was that- of a
Miss Green, who signed her name as N.
Kate Green. The decisiou is that the first
name should have been spelled out to make
the claim valid. Lawyers who part their
names iu the middie have beeu somewhat
startled by this ruling, facetiously observes
the Times-Democrat, and have concluded
to bo on the safe side hv signing their
names hereafter to all legal documents in
full.
It is currently rumored that Senator
Joseph E - Brown will resign his seat in
the United State Senate this winter, and
L
that the pieseut Georgia Legislature will
elect his successor for the unexpired term.
Z. S. Parker, living near Americus, com
milted suicide on Saturday night last. He
mixed up a vile dose of turpentine, whis¬
ky and strychnine and went glimmering
into another latitude. He was about 45
years old, and leaves a mother and four
little children behind tofight the battle ul
life.
