Parental concern about
the new plan for the Perry
Recreation Department soft
ball team was a hot topic in
the March 21 meeting of
Perry City Council. May Lou
Simon spoke on behalf of
parents who could not be at
the meeting because of
schedule conflicts.
According to Simon the
consensus of parents is that
the option of moving the rec.
teams to a private park with
out parental consultation
was not fair.
“Why were the parents not
given a voice," asked Simon
"if there were no parents
there would be no rec.
department."
The answer from council
was that they made the best
decision for the children.
According to Jody Johnson.
Interim Director for the
recreation department says
that a short time frame also
played a role in the decision
process.
In a previous meeting he
stated that he made every
effort to recruit fo r the teams

According to Lee Gilmore,
city manager, council was
presented with 4 options by
the Recreation Commission
to solve the problem of short
comings in registration for
this years rec. teams. The
proposed options included 1)
canceling the program and
refunding the money to par
ents. 2) traveling to Warner
Robins to play in their
league, 3) City of Perry
Teams playing at the Ochla
hatchee league field, or 4)
working with the Ochla
hatchee teams at no extra
cost. In a 4 to 1 vote by
council the 4th option was
chosen with Council Bobby
Glover voicing the lone nay
vote.
Simon voiced concerns
not only about the site of
play but also about dedicat
ed coaches from past years
being “booted out" without
any say so.
According to Simon. City
teams have played against
the Ochlahatchee league
and were met with a cold

Mayor Worrall thanked
the group for all that they
do in the community by
saying that without them
the city would not be what
it is today.
