Spec. Steven T. McDowell is
a member of the 48th
Brigade Combat Team
(BCT) who recently partici
pated in one of the most
realistic scenarios offered by
the U.S. Army at the
National Training Center
(NTC), Fort Irwin, Calif.
The Georgia National
Guard soldier is a member
of Headquarters and
Headquarters Company,
Infantry Brigade based in
Macon. The 48th BCT is
composed of 31 units in

“Anything we can do to
keep our firefighters safe,
we’ll do it,” Howell said. “It
was desperately needed.”
Howell said his depart
ment is always looking for
new grants to help pay for
new equipment.
“Firefighting gear is so
expensive, and you don’t
want to ask the taxpayers to
pay for it,” Howell said.
“But it’s something we need
every year.”
The GMA Safety and
Liability Management
Grant program was intro
duced in 2000 to provide
cities and other municipali
ties with improving employ
ee safety and lessening the
threat of lawsuits from the
public. Since the program
started, 95 cities have won
grants and a total of
$723,500 has been handed
out in 205 different grants.

their employees,” said Steve
Durden, manager of market
ing and field services for the
GMA.
Based in Atlanta, the
GMA is a voluntary, non
profit organization that
works to help cities and
municipalities through
training, education and con
sulting services. There are
500 members in the GMA.
Late last week, the Perry
Fire Department also
secured a $5,000 from the
Flint Energies Foundation
to pay for part of the cost of
a remote control robot that
is used to teach children
about fire safety.
The “Sparky the Fire
Dog” remote-control robot
can look around, wink and
even carry on conversations
and play music as he
“drives” his fire truck. The
robot opens and closes his
thing in town, just the best.”
State Sen. Cecil Staton
said he was honored to be
present Thursday morning.
“I want to say that every
time I have been here I have
gone away inspired,” he
said. “Congratulations to
the residents and all of you
who have had a part in the
success of this organiza
tion.”

costs $9,500, but Howell
said he is looking for other

the kids,” Howell said.
“They remember it.”

in the NFPA’s fire safety
programs.
