standards.
AYP measures how much
improvement a school has
made toward meeting state
academic standards for all
student subgroups.
“As evidenced by the AYP
report, our schools are rising
to the challenges of the No
Child Left Behind Act,” said
Superintendent Danny
Carpenter. “We are proud of
our results, but will contin
ue to work to improve and
meet or exceed the stan
dards.”
Of the four schools that
did not make AYP many are
very successful, yet are on
the list because they did not
meet AYP for one or two
subgroups. Two of the
schools are appealing.
Schools were judged based
on three criteria:

She has survived the sur

done fighting. She wants to
help other women fight by
helping them make sure
they are using the right
weapons in this struggle.
That means getting the
right screenings.
Over and above a mammo
gram, Neeld recommends an
MRI and ultra-sound.
“Women need to be in
charge of their health,” she
said. “They need to be edu
cated, especially if they are
high-risk.”

Century’s international con

Century went a little further
at the convention and
arranged for Laura to meet
another of her personal
goals.
“They arranged a meeting
for me with Katie Couric,
host of NBC’s ‘Today’ show
and advocate for cancer
patients,” she said.
During the meeting, Neeld
discovered that her and
Couric had another common
bond.
“Our dads are both from
Georgia,” Neeld said.
Her dad was the late Allen
Whipple, who owned
Whipple Realty and
Insurance in Perry.
“Dad taught her how to
meet people and look for the
best in others,” she said.

The required test scores
for the CRCT increased over
last year. For example, last
year 50 percent of the stu
dents within each subgroup
were required to pass the
CRCT in math.
At Thomson and Perry
middle schools, students
with disabilities did not
meet the math standards on
the state test.
At Perry High School, stu
dents in the African-
American population did not
meet math standards, while
students considered eco

not meet the language arts
requirements.
At Warner Robins High
School, economically disad
vantaged students did not
meet the math or language
arts requirements.
God, for giving her the
strength to overcome her
cancer, and thanks her
mother, Eleanor Whipple,
and her sister-in-law, Linda
Whipple and her family, for
their continued support.
Now, Neeld just wants to
make a difference.
“I want to be an outreach
for woman who have breast
cancer,” Neeld said. “I want
to focus on having a positive
view.”
Already an advocate for
women to prevent breast
cancer, Neeld hopes to
become a spokeswoman for
breast cancer and be an
inspiration for women bat
