MISSISSIPPI LAND SALES.
The sales of public land which were order
ed to take place in various parts of the country
this Spring, have all been countermanded by
the President. This was done mainly through
the interposition of Mr. Claiborne, who was
anxious "that the settlers upon those lands
should have the benefit of the pre-emption law
now bofore Congress and secure permanent
homes, before their settlements were offered
for sale. As it is rendered certain that the
bill will become a law during the present sess
ion. Mr. Van Buren was but carrying out
the views and principles of his message, by
*1 postponing the sales till after the passage of
the bill.— Miss. Intelligencer, 20th ull.
Tallahassee, March 17.
From the "West.—We understand there is
now every prospect of the speedy removal of
all the fugitive Creeks in West Florida, to the
treaty lands beyond the Mississippi. Gov.
Call has been absent for some time on a mis
sion to this quarter, and has, we learn, effec
ted an interview with the head chief of the
nation, who has consented to bring in all his
people us soon as it can be effected prepara
tory to their removal, which will occupy but
a few days. We learn, further, that the Ap.
alachico’a tribes have also consented to emi.
grate.
Raleigh, (N. C.) March 10.
Indian Disturbances.— We entertain seri
ous fears that much difficulty is about to be
•experienced, in carrying into execution the
Treaty with the Cherokee Indians, which pro
vides for their removal beyond the Missis
sippi. We have a considerable body of them,
it is known, in the Southwestern part of
North Carolina, and so alarming are the in
dications of hostility among them, that the
General Government has made a requisition
upon the Executive of the State, for a force
of Volunteer Infantiy. The Adjutant Gen
eral has, accordingly, by direction of Gov.
Dudley, i-sued orders to the proper Comman
ding Officers, to call out their respective Re
giments, with a view to the immediate organ
ization, if practicable, of one or more Volun
teer Companies in each.
