Mackinac Island bits and pieces
The Chicago to
Mackinac Island
Yacht Race is the
longest fresh-water sail
boat race in the world. The
300 yachts in this year’s
race passed right in front
of Cable Cottage with their
colorful spinnakers and sails
unfurled. What a tough
competition and what a
beautiful sight.
The island horses come
in all shapes, sizes and
breeds.
The most beautiful, to
me, are the Fresians. The
Hackneys are gorgeous also
and are used to pull the
most unusual of the car
riages, which usually carry
visiting dignitaries, brides
and grooms.
The majority of the horses
are the work/utility horses
- Percherons and Belgians
- and they pull the tour
carriages, taxis and drays
(freight delivering wagons).
Mackinac Island does
not allow horse diapers,
so men, known as pooper
scoopers, are hired by the
city to patrol the island and

HOMES look familiar?
It is the mnemonic device
used in school to aid stu
dents in remembering the
five Great Lakes -Huron,
Ontario, Michigan, Erie
and Superior. Since small
Mackinac Island sits in the
middle of large Lake Huron,
the blue sky makes the blue
water look bluer than can
be imagined.
The storms that roll
through large bodies of
water are awesome. The
other night I was awak
ened in the night by the
sound of thunder far, far
away. It moved slowly onto
the island accompanied by
bursts of lightning that
caused Bitsy, my cat, and
me to hide under the cov
ers.
The thunder and light
ning delivered pounding
rain that out of necessity
brought me out from under
the covers to close windows
and bring cushions in off
the porch.
But, once up, I sat at the
front window and watched
the magnificent storm

roared off the island, the
fog crept onto the island
and the foghorn lulled Bitsy
and me back to sleep after
we climbed back up the
stairs and into bed.
Large freighters, the
longest are 1,000 feet and
known as “thousand foot
ers,” make the trip from
Chicago north through
Lake Michigan, under the
Mackinac Bridge, into Lake
Huron, through the Straits
of Mackinac, up to Sault
Saint Marie, Michigan.
There they pass through
the Sault Locks into Lake
Superior and onto Thunder
Bay and Duluth to pick up
iron ore, taconite and other
cargo for delivery back to
Chicago.
These freighters drift
by the Cable Cottage dur
ing the day and at night
they are fully lit and look
UFO-like as they drift by.
Until next week....
