One of these clubs, the
Music Club, was formed by
Gene Salyer with help from
his lovely wife Betty, whom
Gene refers to as his “band
manager!” Gene retired
from the Air Force in 1979
after serving 22 years as a
professional band member.
Fourteen of those years
were spent at the Air Force
Academy as Woodwind
Supervisor of the Symphonic
Band.

the three worked with
teams, of teachers and school
psychologists to develop an
effective learning method
for children. Topics such
as responsibility, sharing,
health, safety and helping
your neighbor were frequent
themes of the stories that
also taught basic reading
skills.

Clooney. When he moved to
Perry, Gene started playing
his instruments again after
a 27 year hiatus. Houston
Springs has allowed him to
do one of the things he loves
- playing music for others’
enjoyment.

our residents are from the
southeast, Houston Springs

Washington, California and
Illinois. Looks like our secret

they became ill, took care of

always been an inspiration
to me.”

Ruth and Watt Boler, a
pharmacist, were married in
1937 and soon became co
owners with Joe Beddingfield
of the famous Houston Drug
Store on Main Street during
the 1940 s through 19705.
The drug store, which
featured a soda fountain, a

booths, was a favorite hang
out for Perry youth during
that golden era in the life of

Canada also jumped on the
Dick and Jane bandwagon
and published exact copies
of the American originals.
The series started with a
pre-primer and continued
up through grade six with
such titles as We Work and
Play, Sally, Dick and Jane
and Guess Who.
There were also many
workbooks and teaching suds
to go along with the series.
With the civil rights move
ment gaining ground in the
‘6o’s, the series introduced
the first African-American
characters, Mike, Pam srnd
Penny who moved in next
door. Children were taught
family, they wanted to move
to a smaller home with less
maintenance but they didn’t
want to leave Perry because
they would be leaving behind
their family and friends.
Well, they didn’t have to.
Houston Springs was just
what they were looking for,
and more.
Their grandchildren love
visiting and going for a swim
or fishing in the lake. Not
only are they residents, but
Charles works as one of our
“golf-cart patrolling” secu
rity personnel. They love
being able to participate
in the ongoing activities at
the clubhouse, visiting with
friends or just relaxing at
home.

one of Perry High’s great
est girl basketball players,
and was a great competitor
in the tradition of her five
famous brothers.
She is a Christian lady
whose life has inspired

Unfortunately the series
fell out of favor in the early
70’s when different teaching
methods became more popu
lar and politically correct.
These wonderful books can
still be found at book sales,
yard sales and flea markets.
Take a look at eßay and
you will be amazed at the
prices some of these wonder
ful old books are bringing,
especially pre-primers, com
plete sets, teachers editions
and the large rare picture
charts the teachers used on
an easel at the front of the
