THE ILLUSIONIST 3
stars: A luscious-looking
fairy tale/mystery aimed at
patient grown-up audiences,
with Edward Norton as an
enigmatic magician in old
Vienna, Jessica Biel as his
long-lost love, Rufus Sewell
as a brutal crown prince and
good ol’ Paul Giamatti as
a dogged police investigator.
It’s dead-set on entertaining.
PG-13.
LITTLE MISS
SUNSHINE 3 1/2 stars:
This film festival favorite is
an off-kilter screwball com
edy with real heart, one that
brings its comically dysfunc
tional modern American
family to real life. Stars
Steve Carell, Toni Collette,
Greg Kinnear and a scene
stealing Alan Arkin. R.
IDLEWILD 3 stars:
OutKast’s movie is an eccen
tric, over-the-top musical/
gangster yarn that, while
not perfect, is lively and
eye-catching. If you have a
problem with a man in a
fur coat, rapping on stage in
1935 Georgia, then this isn’t
the movie for you. R.
INVINCIBLE 3 stars:
Mark Wahlberg deliberately
and effectively underplays
his based-on-real-life role as
a 30-year-old bartender who
tries out for the Philadelphia
Eagles in 1976. It pulls on
your heartstrings, even
though it rarely looks like
it’s really trying to. PG.
HOW TO EAT FRIED
WORMS 3 stars: Those
roughly the age of the mov
ie’s colorful group of fifth
graders are likely to laugh,
a lot, It’s about a picked-on
new kid who agrees to eat
10 worms, cooked in many
strange ways, by sundown.
Gross c and that’s a good
thing. PG.
SNAKES ON A PLANE
2 1/2 stars: If there are
hundreds of crazed snakes
rampaging through the red
eye from Honolulu to L.A.,
there had better be lurid
snake violence and at least
one good Samuel L. Jackson
rant.
No worries. R.
ACCEPTED 2 1/2 stars:
Rejected everywhere else,
college student start their
own college, with classes
such as Walking Around
and Thinking About Stuff.
Justin Long stars. It has
some laughs. PG-13.
WORLD TRADE
CENTER 3 1/2 stars: Two
police officers lie trapped in
the rubble, and their fami
lies wait, agonizingly, for
word. Oliver Stone takes a
small part of a huge story
and comes up with the year’s
second fine 9/11 film c not
quite as visceral as United
93, but still a powerful, well
told story. PG-13.
TALLADEGA NIGHTS:
THE BALLAD OF RICKY
BOBBY 3 stars: Will
Ferrell’s a dim racing star
in a comedy that pokes
much fun at America’s
NASCAR- loving population.
Sloppy and not as funny as
Anchorman, but still plenty
of the absurdist humor that
goes with the territory when
you allow Ferrell to run all
over it in his big white bun
hugger undies.
PG-13.
THE NIGHT LISTENER
(3 stars): Robin Williams
is a radio host who strikes
up a phone friendship with
a young listener, though
things are not as they seem.
It’s an eerie, short (82 min
utes) mystery without the
pumped-up scenes of a typi
cal thriller; instead, think of
it as a moody thriller for the
art-house set. R.
THE ANT BULLY (3
stars): There are many
imaginative visual jokes
packed into this fine, excit
ing children’s story about a
boy shrunk down to the size
of an ant. Rousing adventure
and narrow escapes await
him. Lessons are learned,
too - though they aren’t
crammed down our throats.
PG.

Paul Giamatti, left, and Edward Norton star in ‘The Illusionist’.
‘lllusionist’ witty entertainment
By STEVEN UHLES
Morris News Service
As The Illusionist begins,
Edward Norton sits alone on
a bare stage in old Vienna, a
hundred or more years ago.
He’s concentrating fierce
ly, and within seconds his
mental powers seem to con
jure up the ghostly figure of
a young woman, right there
in front of the astonished
crowd.
Then good old Paul
Giamatti steps up and
rushes the stage, a flock
of pointy helmet-wearing
policeman with him.
He’s arresting the illu
sionist, he bellows, for “dis
turbing public order, charla
tanism and threats against
the empire.” Serious charg
es indeed, and a lot to hang
on one man, especially a
soft-spoken illusionist.
But this luscious-looking
mystery/fairy tale, which is
clearly dead- set on enter
taining, soon jumps back
in time to deftly spin the
story of how Eisenheim the

In June, I was invited
to speak to the Fort Valley
Kiwanis club about my

accompany me were Horace

the question and answer
period, Dot was asked to
recount the details of the
notorious fight. I shall
never forget one remark
Dot made. He said that
when he and the state
golden gloves champion,
Rudolph Cannon, squared
off to begin the boxing
match, Rudolph asked Dot
what were they fighting
for. Dot responded, “I sup
pose it’s because you’re
from Fort Valley and I’m
from Perry.” Dot said
he had fought 67 profes

but that was his tough

details a graphic, blow-by
blow account of the fight
as recounted by Dot.
Dot once got in a fight at
a basketball game. Coach
Staples warned Dot that
the next violation would
result in his dismissal
from the team. Several
weeks later, if happened.
Dot slugged a guy on the
way to the dressing room.
The next day, Dot entered
the principal’s office and
handed Coach Staples
his uniform. “I’m sorry
Fessor,” he said, “but I
couldn’t help hitting the
guy.” As Dot turned to
leave, Fessor said, “Dot,
I’m curious, just why did
you have to hit the guy?”
Dot said, “Well Fessor, I

Who’s it for? It’s sumptu
ous, witty entertainment for
grown-ups.
Credits: Starring Edward
Norton, Paul Giamatti,
Jessica Biel and Rufus
Sewell. Directed by Neil

story by Steven Millhauser.
Running time: 1 hour, 50

nudity-free sex scene, a little
violence.
Illusionist got to be such a
troublemaker. *
It seems he grew up a
humble cabinetmaker’s
son, who, after “a chance
encounter with a traveling
magician,” ‘soon becomes
a gifted magician too. And
one day, walking down the
street while balancing an
egg on a stick, he captures
the eye of a lovely young
noblewoman. An ardent,
had no choice. He called
you a very bad name that
I can’t repeat.” Fessor
asked Dot to whisper
it. After hearing what
the boy called him, Fessor
looked down at the desk for
a moment, rubbed his chin
as if in deep thought, then
said to Dot, “Son, come
back over here and get
your uniform...and be at
practice this afternoon.”
Dot would want me to
leave you with the comfort
ing words of a children’s
song. It goes like this:
“Jesus loves me this I know.
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong.
We are weak, but He is
strong. Yes, Jesus loves me
for the Bible tells me so.”
And, yes, Jesus loved Dot

you and me.

than anyone in the room,
which is going to serve him
well. Biel is just fine in her
period costumes; she has an
old-world charm that’s a far
cry from 7th Heaven. And
Sewell glowers magnificent
ly; when he flies into a rage,
he soars.
Giamatti is terrific, as
usual: His Chief Inspector
Uhl takes delight in
Eisenheim’s trickery and
really wants to see no harm
come to him.
But he’s become a lackey
for that evil crown prince,
so he has a job to do.
The Illusionist is an
uncommonly good story,
just mysterious and corny
enough to satisfy those with
a craving for the kind of
old- fashioned, romantic
costume piece that’s out of
style these days.
It also has much sly wit,
an elegant Philip Glass

Prague locations that stand
in fetchingly for Vienna.
Consider them a bonus.
