Shopping for furniture

I love to hear from my read
ers and receive requests
for ideas on what kind of
articles to write. This time,
someone has asked about
where to find good furniture
bargains and these are just
a few tips that I would like
to share!
It’s that time of year when
kids are heading off for col
lege or folks are just starting
out in new homes or furnish
ing their first apartments.
Instead of spending big
bucks for nice furniture
or trying to get buy with
“cheap” particle board junk,
try some of these ideas for
“feathering your nest for
pennies.”
First of all, put the word
out among friends and fam

The next best place to look
is at yard sales. Many local
papers have full listings by
Thursday and Friday. Get a
map and figure out where
to start first. Try to get
there right at starting time
but please don’t be an early
bird!
That is bad yard-sal
ing manners! Try to plan
out a route where you can
get to as many as possible.
Most sales end by noon. It
really helps if you own a
truck or van so if you do
get lucky, you can tote your
purchase home. I once had
a bad experience of paying
cash for a pair of recliners
but couldn’t fit them in my
vehicle. I told the owner I
was going to be right back

minutes later with my truck
only to find that the person
has sold them to someone
else for more than I paid,
even though I had paid full

This is very bad yard sale
etiquette on the sellers part!
It is usually good to barter
with the seller but if you feel
the price is fair, just pay it
and scoop up your purchase
and take it with you!
You can always ask for a
better price, the worst thing
that could happen is they
say no and if you like it and
think it is a good price then
buy it! If you try to wait it

Simplicity and
joy of mud pies
Do you know of any
kids out there who
are making mud
pies? Have you seen any
kids lately with stained
hands, dirty fingernails or
a smudge of wet dirt across
their shirts or faces?
See, I don’t think that
children are making mud
pies anymore. But where
would they find the time
for such a simple childhood
pursuit? They’re too busy
with computers, iPods,
video games, DVDs and 200
channels of television at
their disposal. The expira
tion date on mud pies, even
in the South where we are
mighty proud of our dirt, is
many years out of date.
What a shame that is.
My childhood was coun
try simple. It consisted of
things now considered bor
ing by most kids. It was
filled with adventurous
romps with my dogs - just
tea and dessert. The open
stage will be offered to any
singers and musicians wish
ing to perform.
Following the auction,
Jerry Jackson and band will
perform. They will be fol
lowed by Smith and Jones
and the Sho Nuff country
band, featuring Charlie
Smith and Bud Jones,
plain yard mutts who ate
table scraps, never saw a
vet and yet lived to be old
- hundreds of books, joyous
afternoons splashing in the
creek, sewing clothes for
my Barbie, running bare-
