Container ship
linked to July spill
SAVANNAH (MNS) -
The container ship Vernet
pumped a ballast tank con
taminated with heavy fuel
oil into the Savannah River
in the early morning hours
of July 17, a ship detention
report indicates.
Cmdr. David Murk, com
manding officer of Coast
Guard Marine Safety Unit
Savannah, would neither
confirm nor deny the Vernet’s
involvement Monday, saying
only that his office has com
pleted its investigation of
the 22,000-gallon spill that
closed Savannah’s port for
10 hours and stained the
shoreline and marsh grass
with a thick black sludge.
However, a Coast Guard
detention report obtained
by the Savannah Morning
News indicates the German
flagged Vernet, owned by
CMA CGM, was detained
July 23 in Hampton Roads,
Va., after it passed through
the Port of Savannah July
17.

Georgians take time
to remember 9-11
By DANIEL YEE
Associated Press Writer
ATLANTA (AP) - Georgians
paused Monday to remem
ber the fifth anniversary of
the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
through Freedom Walks and
public memorial services
that included moments of
silence, American flags and
prayer.
Julie Peterson of Dallas,
Ga., took time at Georgia
Tech’s campus to reflect on
the lives lost in the Sept. 11
attacks at the World Trade
Center, the Pentagon and
aboard a jet that crashed
in Pennsylvania. A grassy

terrorist attacks.
“You can’t go to a place
and see this and not think
of the individual people and
what happened to them and
what their families went
through,” said Peterson, an
academic adviser for the uni
versity. “I prayed for our
leaders and our families.”
Gov. Sonny Perdue and
U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson
were among speakers dur
ing a Sept. 11 remembrance
ceremony Monday evening
at Kennesaw Mountain
National Battlefield Park.
“Buildings may fall, but
the spirit of a free people is
unshakeable,” Perdue said.
