which Holman had a sack,
but it also saw Israel Troupe,
a wide receiver committed to
the University of Georgia,
take a snap at quarterback
and slip tackles to get first
down on the Bear 30-yard
line.
Troupe later threw a pass
that was almost intercepted.
At his normal wideout slot,
Troupe took an out-pattern
toss but was brought down
by Martez King and Wes
Johnson for fourth down on
the 27. Edwards ended the
drive making the long three
pointer.
Houston County’s offense
had to overcome mistakes
in the game, most of which
were in the form of holding
penalties.
One such call on the first
series negated a huge pass
pickup of 44 yards into the
red zone. Up next was the
controversy of the night
when Ben Collins and the
punting unit came on the
field.
Did the Tift return man
call for a fair catch? Maybe
he thought he did, for he
caught the ball on the 50 and
stood still looking around for
a whistle. Hearing none, he
took off running and wasn’t
stopped until Collins cor
ralled him on the 10.
There was a Houston
timeout and appeal from
head coach Doug Johnson
that indeed a fair-catch
signal of some kind was
made. The spot of the ball
didn’t change, though, and
two plays later Baxley hit
Anthony Holloway on a short
4-yard touchdown strike at
5:29. Edwards upped the
Tift lead to 10-0.
The Bears offense was
able to overcome a second
holding call as O’Neal, on
4th-and-l, shed two tacklers

going right for a 24-yard
pickup on the Tift 22. The
drive stalled there, though,
as Houston missed a field
goal try of 39 yards wide
right.
In the second quarter, Dean
forced a Baxley fumble that
Anthony Harris recovered
on the Blue Devil 26. On a
two-play drive, DJ Dodson
took a trap nine yards, then
O’Neal scrambled the rest
of the way for a touchdown.
Michael Thompson’s PAT
brought the Bears within
three, 10-7, at 7:33.
The Bears defense contin
ued to hit Baxley on the pass
(Roddy Nixon) and force
another fumble (Harris).
With the football back, the
offensive line began to assert
itself against the veteran
Blue Devil defenders.
Houston drove 12 plays
from its own 20 to the Tift
4 with 11 rushes, two third
down conversions by O’Neal,
and a pass interference call.
O’Neal took an end-around
from the 29, shook off more
tackle attempts and got a

Thompson, with 18 sec
onds until the break, chipped
in a 21-yard field goal, mak
ing it a new game for the
second half at 10-10.
It was still 10-10 after the
third quarter, Houston tak
ing a lot of time off the clock
in an eight-play opening
series that stopped when the
Tift defense shut down rush
ing room up the middle.
Troupe, catching a ball
open in the flat, turned in
a 23-yard gain to the Bears
18. The Blue Devils had a
touchdown taken away on
a hold, then Chris Prewett
stopped an outside pass for
lost yards on the 30. Baxley
flicked the ball to the left
corner only to have Dedrick
Early pick it off.
To start the fourth quar
ter, Houston punted the ball,
which was fair caught on
the Blue Devil 10. The home
defense forced a three-and
out situation, and Edwards’
strong punt, with a clear
fair catch signal made, was
fumbled back to the Blue
Devils on the Bear 45.

Tift also benefited from a
late-hit call for a spot at the

gained clutch yards - nine
of them - to the 11. Two
plays later, and with the best

Baxley hit Marvin Chaney
for a 9-yard touchdown at
8:55 remaining.
Down 17-10, the Bears
were looking at a three-and
out deep in their territory.
When Collins punted, the
Blue Devils returned the
earlier favor with a fumbled
return that Prewett recov

opponents’ 45.
Senior guard Jimmy Bailey
pulled and led O’Neal to a
big fourth-down conversion

Tift would also be called
for undercutting somebody,
a 15-yard foul to the 17. Five
plays later Jeff Thompson
sneaked the ball over the
goal line for a 1-yard touch

tied the game 17-17 at 2:18
