cymbals.
“I feel cymbal is the best
instrument in the band,”
Lowe said. “They have small
cymbals for girls, but we use
the ones the boys use.”
Lowe joined the Cymbal
Chicks because she loved
percussion. She played trom
bone, tuba and Sousaphone.
“In a way, we’re like the
drum majors and help the
bass section keep the beat,”
Lowe said.
She enjoys the hand move
ments that come with play
cymbals, which is just as
well because she is inter
ested in learning about the
human body.
“I wan to major (in col
lege) in a medical field,”
Lowe said. “I really want to
be a biologist.”
Tashayla Durham is the
Cymbal Chicks captain. She
is the only senior on the line
and is a first-year cymbalist,
having left the pit (mallets)
to tryout for the Chicks.
“It was time to do some
thing different,” Durham
said. “We have fun but when
it’s time to perform, we get
serious.”
Durham also intends to
study medicine. She plans to
join the National Guard and
is already accepted into its
nursing program.

Anna Parker tried out for
the Cymbal Chicks from the
drum line.
“I played the bass drum,”
the junior said. “The drum
smashed a nerve in my hip
bone and made my left thigh
numb. I switched to the cym
bals at the last minute.”
Like the other Cymbal
Chicks, Parker is an accom
plished musician. She plays
drums, piano and percus
sion.
“I tried out for the Cymbal
Chicks because I get to look
pretty.”
Parker plans to audition
for the snare drums her
senior year.
Dominique Driver, also a
junior, played flute last year
before trying out for the
Cymbal Chicks.
“It’s the uniforms, and the
music is easier to learn,”
Driver said. “I’ve always
wanted to be a percussionist.
I played the flute because
I didn’t know I could play
drums.”
She echoed the other
Chicks when she said the
cymbal line was more fun.
“I like the music,” Driver
explained. “I always wanted
to be in the band. I wouldn’t
pay attention to the football
games; I watched the bands
at halftime.”
One of her favorite movies
is “Drumline.”

“Since the sixth grade,”
she said. “I was the little girl

Patterson has the most
experience with marching
bands. She loves to watch
the drumlins.

Patterson switched from

There were a couple of
