Bush returns to tout Collins in race against Marshall
By DOUG GROSS
Associated Press Writer
Making his second swing
through Georgia in as many
days, President Bush on
Tuesday whipped up mid
dle Georgia Republicans as
the GOP struggles to keep
control of Congress in next
week’s elections.
The campaign stop at
the Georgia National
Fairgrounds and Agricenter
was technically a get-out
the-vote party for all Georgia
Republicans. But Bush spent
much of the visit touting
Mac Collins, a former con
gressman who is challenging
incumbent Democrat Jim
Marshall in Georgia’s Bth
Congressional District.
Bush told a support
ive crowd that a vote for
Marshall - a moderate who
has touted his own conser
vative credentials - is a vote
for national Democrats who
are too liberal for Georgia.
“A vote to send a Democrat
to Congress is a vote for
the liberal Democrat leader
ship in Washington D.C.,”

Collins, who left the House
two years ago for a failed U.S.
Senate bid, sounded a simi
lar theme - taking a swipe at
California Congresswoman
Nancy Pelosi, the House
Democratic leader and
potential House speaker if
Democrats take control.
“Let’s turn out the vote
on Tuesday and let’s send
Mrs. Pelosi a message,”
Collins said. “Mrs. Pelosi, we
don’t agree with your San
Francisco, west coast ideas
and values.”
The middle Georgia dis
trict was redrawn along with
the state’s entire congres
sional map last year after
Republicans took control of
the Georgia Legislature. The
district, which now leans
more Republican than when
Marshall was last elected,
voted 60 percent for Bush in
the 2004 election.

dicted throughout the coun
try. Democrats must gain
15 seats in the 435-member
House to take control.
With Bush’s popularity
flagging over issues includ
ing the war in Iraq, some
national Republicans have
looked to distance them
selves from the president
and his policies as polls sug
gest Democrats are poised
to make gains in the House
and Senate.
But recently Bush has been
frequent flier to Georgia,
where two GOP congressio
nal hopefuls have welcomed
his support.
Tuesday’s visit will be the
president’s fourth in just
over a month. He appeared
once before at a fundrais
er for Collins and twice on
behalf of former congress
man Max Burns, who’s
taking on incumbent John
Barrow in east Georgia.
Marshall is a former Army
Ranger who won commenda
tions, including two Bronze
Stars, in Vietnam. He has
