State Briefs
Entire 3rd ID might
go back to Iraq
FORT STEWART (MNS)
- Most of the 3rd Infantry
Division’s 20,000 soldiers
likely will return for a third
combat tour in Iraq in 2007,
the division’s commander
said Tuesday.
“Given today’s conditions,
by next fall the division will
be back in Iraq,” said Maj.
Gen. Rick Lynch during a
luncheon briefing with local
reporters.
Unlike its previous two
combat tours, however, the
Army division will not deploy
all at once. Its four combat
brigades, now designed as
independent fighting units,
will go separately and be
plugged into existing com
mand structures wherever
they are needed in Iraq.
About 4,000 soldiers with
the Ist Brigade Combat
Team already have orders
to begin a yearlong deploy
ment in mid January. Lynch
declined to say where the
brigade will operate in Iraq.
Judge: Candidate
lacks Ga. residency
ATLANTA (AP) - A judge
has recommended that a
Democratic candidate for the
state Senate in Georgia be
disqualified as a candidate,
saying there is “no credible
evidence” that he lives in
the district he is seeking to
represent.
Secretary of State Cathy
Cox will ultimately make the
decision about whether Mell
Traylor should remain a can
didate for the Nov. 7 general
election. Traylor, a former
Georgia state lawmaker, is
running to unseat the state
Senate’s top Republican,
Eric Johnson, of Savannah.

At a hearing last week
before Administrative Law
Judge Michael M. Malihi,
Traylor faced questions
about whether he resides
in Georgia or neighboring
South Carolina.
Traylor, 56, has a driver’s
license and voter registra
tion card saying he lives
in Savannah. But the only
house for which he pays rent
and utilities is on Hilton
Head Island, S.C. The retired
real estate broker and devel
oper drives a Mercedes Benz
with South Carolina license
plates. The home he claims
as his Savannah address is
owned by his cousin, who
says Traylor doesn’t live
there.
Georgia law requires that
at the time of their elec
tion members of the Georgia
state Senate must have been
legal residents of their dis
trict for at least one year.
Cox predicts 48
percent turnout
ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia
Secretary of State Cathy Cox
on Tuesday predicted that
48 percent of active regis
tered voters - or roughly 2.1
million people - would cast
ballots in next Tuesday’s
general election.
That projected turnout is
below the 54 percent seen in
the state’s 2002 general elec
tion. Voter turnout in the
2004 presidential election
was nearly 78 percent.
But Cox said the figure
is within the typical turn
out range in a gubernatorial
election cycle.
Cox based her prediction
on historical trends, absen
tee ballot requests, the num
ber of new voter registra
tions recently processed and
reports from county elec
tions officials.
