WRPD graduates latest class from Citizens Police Academy
By RAY LIGHTNER
Journal Staff Writer
What do two airmen, two
English ladies, a couple of
married couples, residents
both black and white con
cerned about their neigh
borhood, veterans and a
newspaper reporter have in
common?
They are latest group to
graduate from the Warner
Robins Citizens Police
Academy. They all spent two
hours a night for the past 12
Tuesdays together, learning
about the Warner Robins
Police Department.
“The idea,” explained
instructor Capt. John Clay,
“is y’all get to know us as
we get to know you. Citizens
and police work together to
make a better community.”
Clay said, “when people
ask ‘why do the police do
that?’ y’all might be able to
answer.”
Instructors like Clay,
Field Training Officer
Mike Fennell, K-9 Training
Officer Wayne Fisher and
Patrol Sgt. Todd Rountree
explained in their classes
why officers do what they
do. Most of the time it is for
their own safety.
“We are no different than
y’all. We are citizens with a
common interest in the safe
ty of society,” Fisher said.
Participants in the semi
annual class saw what the
officers dc first hand in ride
alongs with officers, as well

It’s not like on TV
A field trip on the first
week of the 12-week class
gave participants a tour of
Warner Robins Police head
quarters on Young Avenue -
including what those arrest
ed see during their stay from
the backseat of the car to the
holding cell.
Another on the third week
showed particpants the
county 911 center, which
dispatches police, fire and
ambulance services for the
cities and the county.
During the course stu
dents leaned how to take
fingerprints, search for a
missing person and had the
opportunity to fire the guns
the officers use from a Glock
handgun, a M-16 rifle and a
shotgun that fires bean bags.
It is a non-lethal means of
stopping someone who may
be trying to harm himself or
others.
Maj. John Wagner, opera
tions commander told the
graduates, “18 years ago I
sat in your spot when then-
Capt. Harry Dennard taught
the class. You see what goes
on behind the scenes. You’ve
got to see the human side.
We’re just people like you.”
