HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL
Society offers pathway back to the past
By JOE SERSEY
Journal Correspondent
The Central Georgia
Genealogical Society, accord
ing to a release from the
organization, was formed
to provide information to
genealogists throughout the
country regarding court
houses and government
offices at the local level.
The committee was estab
lished by the National
Genealogical Society, with
Mike Brubaker as the
Georgia liaison.
His job is “to create a net
work of individuals and orga
nizations within the state to
share information on local
records, their accessibility
and their value to genealogi
cal and historical research,”
reports correspondence sec
retary Sherrie Nelson.
The CGGS meets the third
Thursday of every month,
and Nelson says visitors are
always welcome.
The local society formed in
1978 and has more than 200
members spread throughout
the United States.
“(Members) receive four
quarterly journals,” Nelson
said.
“A variety of libraries
around the country have
subscriptions, and patrons
see the quarterly and join
to glean other information
about this area.”

The society also has cem

is in the members.
“We have many knowl

monthly meetings,” Nelson
said. “They can give ideas on
family research.”
Usually, about 20 to 30
people attend the meetings.
Nelson said that they always
try to have a guest speaker
who can speak about genea
logical matters.
The society also has close
ties to Washington Memorial

“It has one of the best

Nelson said.
“We try to keep a close rela
