sex assault
AUGUSTA - Police have
arrested a female Harlem
High School teacher and
coach who is accused of hav
ing sex with a 16-year-old
girl enrolled in the school.
Melissa Chase, 28, a soft
ball coach, was arrested at
the school at about 3 p.m.
Monday, Columbia County
sheriffs Capt. Steve Morris
said.
She was charged with sex
ual assault against a student
enrolled in school, which is a
felony, Morris said.
The encounter between
the coach and student took
place this month at the
school, Morris said.
He said the alleged vic
tim is a girl but would not
say whether she played on a
team coached by Chase.
Chase was at the Columbia
County Detention Center on
Monday, Morris said, where
she is awaiting a bond hear
ing. Morris said he did not
have access to a police report
on the incident Monday.
Chase, an Augusta resi

according to a statement
released by Columbia County
school Superintendent
Tommy Price.
Price refused a request for
a telephone interview, say

School buses
collide in Fulton
ATLANTA (AP) - Several
people reported minor inju
ries following a collision
between two school buses
Tuesday morning, Fulton
County officials said.
The accident happened
just before 10 a.m. on Fulton
Industrial Boulevard at
Interstate 20, said Fulton
County Police spokesman
Cpl. Scott Mcßride.
Carrollton City Schools
Superintendent Tom Wilson
said 84 students and several
staff members and parents
were on their way to Atlanta
Civic Center when the acci
dent happened.
The driver of one of the
buses reported being cut off
by a truck and when the
bus braked, it was struck in
the rear by the second bus,
Mcßride said. The driver of
the second bus was ticketed
for following a vehicle too

of the bus drivers.
“It’s my understanding it
was not a major accident,”
he said.
Mcßride said there were
no visible injuries after the
accident but several stu
dents were taken to the hos
pital by their parents after
complaining of injuries. The
driver of one of the buses
was taken to the hospital by
ambulance.
The superintendent said
most of the injuries involved
bumps, bruises and sore
necks, and none appeared
to be life-threatening. The
students are ninth- through
12th-graders at Carrollton
High School.
Wilson said the students
remaining on the buses were
taken back to the school in
case any of them experienced
problems during the day.
“We’re just fortunate it
wasn’t worse,” Wilson said.
Wilson says the buses
were about 40 miles from
the school when the accident
happened.

ning, bringing the number
of fatal police shootings in
the county to 11 this year.
According to police, a man
came out of a home and said
his wife had assaulted him
with a machete, and offi
cers then saw a woman run
ning down the street with a
knife.
She refused to drop the
weapon and ran into another
home. When confronted by
an officer again, she lunged
at an officer who shot her,
police said. Neither the offi
cer nor the woman killed
were identified immediately.
Authorities said the officer
was placed on administra
tive leave, which is routine
in a fatal police shooting.
The death followed a
meeting earlier in the day
between relatives of those
killed in earlier shootings
and DeKalb chief executive
Vernon Jones and acting
Police Chief Nick Marinelli.
